USB Sound card

I was curious about USB Sound cards. The one with the AUDIO and MICROPHONE jacks to usb. Do they make a difference or it's just a waste of money? I was thinking about buying a Plantronics Gamecom 367, it runs on 2 jacks. curious if a usb sound card would make it sound any better.

Those sound cards are portable and are used for LANs. Most PCI-e sound cards sound better than a USB sound card so it's easy to decide if you care about sound. I use a USB sound card for now because it came with my headset but I'll be getting a PCI-e sound card for my new build.

If you don't use the usb sound card do you see any difference between using it and not using it.

If you aren't using a DAC a USB audio adapter is going to be pretty much identical to onboard sound. Using a DAC, however, is where you get your moneys worth in a USB audio system if you dont have onboard digital ports (optical). However, the additional cost required in getting a good DAC or headphone amp kind of puts it out of most people's reach, even though the increased audio quality is well worth it.

A friend of mine has the Plantronics Gamecom777, basically the big brother to the headset I want. and he compared a couple songs from turning on and off the usb soundcard that it comes with. (mine doesnt come with it) and he said it's worth the difference.. I'm sort of stuck at the moment. Any recommendations for a cheap but worth the money usb sound card? 10 bucks?

The one that comes with the Plantronics 777 is a USB adapter with emulated 5.1 surround sound. Something like this stand-alone isn't going to be cheap. The only thing I can think of is something like the Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS which emulates 7.1 on headphones, and costs around $90. Something similar is SoundBlaster's USB Crystalizer and Extigy series. To be honest, the onboard sound on your motherboard is probably better in this situation than a $10 USB audio adapter which will likely be slower and lower quality than your onboard sound.

Hm. From the price compared to the 367 to the 777, do you think it's worth it for the price. I think the 367 is about 25+ and the 777 is around 50. maybe a bit more. so double.? worth it?

I believe the sound quality is better on the 777's but I haven't heard either set so I cant really make a good recommendation.
