Thanks for all replys i shall + rep you all who have helped

You had to download Java to get all of the base classes and the compiler itself. Without it you would not have been able to get anything to compile, you would not be able to code, thus you would not be able to make any programs frown.gif

Eclipse just makes compiling code easier, it still uses the JDK you downloaded in the background (essentially it's running the command line compiler in itself)

I have always wanted to learn a language but never had time and when i did i never knew where to look, so ive decided to ask for help.

My questions are:

Where do i start?

What software am i going to need?

Is java the most useful language if i wanted to write maybe a small internet game?

Also Is there any useful links that will help me alot and get me on the road to start learning java.

I have google'd it but i end up looking through hundreds of web pages and then the one's that look promising, end up having some sort of fee.

Thanks to Any Replys!!!
I know there have been some replies to this, but I wanted to answer some of these questions. Firstly, if you haven't learned programming in general, don't learn Java to make something. Learn programming in general first. Java is an OK language to start with. But don't dive in trying to create an internet game. You should start by making simple console applications.

You should start with learning the fundamentals of programming. You'll need to learn about data types, subroutines (or methods in Java), looping constructs, variables, etc., etc. If you try to learn anything to do with graphics or the web right away, you'll end up glossing over the foundation of programming. Learning the basics of programming can be a rewarding exercise without having to create a complex internet game.

And I would recommend against starting with a development environment like Eclipse. I would recommend coding in notepad and compiling at the command prompt.

Here's a great tutorial to get started, in regards to using the Java SDK:

Here is the main tutorial page for the site:

No, it's not. Writing a small internet game is usually accomplished in something like Flash or SilverLight. Flash uses the ActionScript language. It's a scripting language, not a programming language. It's similar to JavaScript (which has nothing to do with Java). SilverLight uses Microsoft technologies like VB or C# with XAML. However, you don't want to get into that until learning the basics of programming, otherwise, you'll just be hacking code snippets together without understanding what is happening in your application.
