Is my ati 5870 broken!!??

Hi guys, ive had a real serious problem now for a while now. my 2 monitors keep going into stanby together at random times, sometimes before bios loads up, sometimes before it gets to the log on screen but most of the time its once ive logged on.

The temperature is mostly idle at 60c and hardly goes higher than 80 odd when im playing games. My power options for sleep and go to stanby are all set to never and its on high performance not balance energy etc. Ive got the latest drivers and ive tried switching to another pci slot and the problem persists.

Personally I think the gpu is screwed :/ but i would like to know for sure, please any help would be great

It idles at 60c? Thats fairly high...mine idles at 33C but i have the improved cooler version so im guessing 40 C maybe for a normal 5870. I would check the cooling on the card. Maybe replace the TIM or raise the fan profile. What particular model is it?

Try using one monitor. sounds like your card is working OT for the dual monitor. What clock speeds is it ideling at? What version of Cat are you using?

60c doesn't seem too hight to me, not for a stock cooler anyway, of course that could just be because I run mine in crossfire. Either way, those temps aren't high enought to be causing those kinds of issues. And 80c under load isn't too shabby at all either, certainly not enough to generate problems. Have you tried running with just one monitor? It might be worth it to see if the problem persists, if it doesn't, it could be one of the monitors as when a monitor is disconnected it can cause the signal to go into stand-by while it adjusts.

My 5870's idle in the 50's...then again I also have them sandwiched in crossfire...

It doesn't sound like heat issue IMO

Ive been told by ATI that they say that 60c isnt too high and also that the 5870 is perfectly fine to be as high as 90c on constant without damaging the cards lifespan, i know its hard to believe it myself

thats just reminded me,a week before the problem started I put a hdmi to dvi on my 2nd dell monitor. But i didn't think twice about that being the problem because I put a waterblock on the card on the same week, and maybe i damaged the gpu by accident. Anyway ill keep 1 monitor on dvi to dvi and if thats fine ill then get another dvi to dvi cable for the 2nd monitor.

thanks for your help
