Core i7-950@3.9..

Thread Starter
I've got my '950 at 3.9 on the stock cooler. (I made a separate thread for this, because it doesn't pertain to the "iMac" thread I made before.)
Can anyone take a look at if this is normal? Temps are spiking 80C with P95. What is the Tjunction for the 950? This is the completely stock cooler, and no other voltages have been bumped up, except for VCore.

What's your vcore? 80c seems really good on the stock cooler. TJ max on an i7 is 100c, but theres no way I'd let mine go that high. I like to keep it under 80c for longevity. But on the stock cooler at 3.9ghz, 80c is great! Was it running small fft's or large?

VCore is at 1.329, which I think might be too high for this OC? This is my first 1366 chip, so I'm not too sure what the upper limits of anything is, except that memory shouldn't go above 1.65V. I'm playing it safe, you could say..since I don't know how much I can push the voltages on anything. After I can get a better cooler, I'll be able to go higher, I'd imagine. Also, HT is on, but Turbo is not on. It would crash a few minutes after booting to the desktop with TB on. Also, I'm going to find the cash for a few more gfx cards, to balance out the power. Would dual SLI GT200-based cards be a nice match, with the GTS 250 in PhysX?

Wow, on the stock cooler, that's an amazing temp!!! All i7's oc differently, so there no too high. The highest I like to go when ocing is 1.4v. I don't know what you mean about balancing out the power, but I'd go with sli'd gtx 460s and a gtx 250 for physic.

I've got Speedstep on, because I noticed that temps would spike to around 95C. So when I need all of the speed, it'll go to the standard 23x multi, but it stays low. Is it normal to keep speedstep on, or off for overclocking? I'm sure if I tried, I'd be able to hit the 4.0 Ghz clock. Would that make it one of the highest clocks for a stock cooler? As for "balancing out the power", the i7/X58 chipset is more powerful than the graphics card, meaning that for any games, the GTS250 is the bottleneck, not the processor or memory.

Generally speaking, off.

I would recommend getting even a cheap after-market cooler like the Hyper 212+. It will shave off a lot of that heat.

Also, it really kind of depends on which apps and games you're talking about when you try to determine where the bottleneck lies.

Normaly, you'd just have turbo and ht on (ht is optional), it makes the overclock more stable. Also, since you're running only a 1600x900 monitor, you don't need that much power. I would recommend something like a gtx 465/HD 5850/or wait another week or two until the gtx 560 is released. But you don't need the power from two cards.

So I'd get no benefit from SLI in any configuration?

I seriously doubt that you have 80C running P95 with a stock intel HS.

because, i7 950 with HT Enabled, 3.9 OC with 1.32 Core + Stock Intel Heatsink + Prime 95 = 90C to 100C real fast.

Unless you were running SLI on lower power cards... otherwise, just get a good quality single GPU. Don't go to cheap on the GPU though if you plan on upgrading your monitor within the next couple years.
