Recommended +12V amperage/wattage

Thread Starter
This is my recommendations for the recommended minimum +12V current/power rating for various power supply wattages from 180W to 1200W.

For single rail power supplies: Find the load table for the power supply (usually on box and/or label). The number listed under the +12V is the number to go by.

For multi rail power supplies: Find the load table for the power supply (usually on box and/or label). Under +12V, ignore the individual amperage ratings. Underneath of those should be a "total combined +12V wattage". That is the number to go by.

If a power supply has less +12V capacity than that listed then it is overrated. It may be able to supply the total wattage it is rated for under testing conditions, but in real use on a modern computer that draws 90% or more of its power from the +12V rail (more in enthusiast systems) it won't be able to realistically provide that figure, since the +12V components will be overtaxed and protections may cut in.

If a power supply has more +12V capacity than that listed then it is not a higher wattage power supply than claimed. In all liklihood it just uses a DC-DC secondary design, which means that the minor rails draw their power from the +12V, so the minor rail usage is subtracted from the +12V rating. DC-DC is popular in high end enthusiast units.

Without further ado, here is my recommendation list:

180W - 13A/156W
200W - 15A/180W
250W - 18A/216W
300W - 22A/264W
350W - 26A/312W
380W - 28A/336W
400W - 30A/360W
430W - 32A/384W
450W - 34A/408W
500W - 38A/456W
550W - 42A/504W
600W - 46A/552W
650W - 50A/600W
700W - 54A/648W
750W - 58A/696W
800W - 62A/744W
850W - 66A/792W
900W - 71A/852W
950W - 75A/900W
1000W - 79A/948W
1050W - 83A/996W
1100W - 87A/1044W
1150W - 91A/1092W
1200W - 95A/1140W

So my psu( Antec SG-850 ) has a combined 65 amps @ 780watts and it's classed as a 850w. So my power supply is overated?

Very informative thread/post btw

Well as I said it doesn't necessarily mean it can give out more than the label says. This one only has 1A/12W more than I recommend for a 450W, so close enough for government work, right?

Too hard set... I would use ranges....

i.e. 300w PSU = 12v at 23-24A.
Once again...

My 700Watt OCZ is: 57A/680watt. This thing has been a great PSU going on 4 years now. *crosses fingers*

EDIT: Fixed amp

Did you read the foreword? If it had 72A@12V then it would be an >900W PSU.

Well mine doesn't give a total amp so I just added the 4 12v rails.
