On-board SATA controller dead.

Thread Starter
Title says it all. Everything else works, just not the SATA connections. What if I were to buy a PCIe SATA controller and disable the on-board SATA controller, would this in turn fix my problem?

This question is for a friends PC build, not the laptop in my signature.

Yes it would work but u will need to plug the sata hard drives into the PCIe controller for the drives to be usable.

I was reading somewhere that the PCIe card would need to be bootable. What does that mean and is this true? How sure are you that this PCIe card would actually solve my problems?

What it means that a PCIe card has to be bootable is that the computer needs to be able to load the operating system from the hard dives so the computer can be used (it is true).

How many hard drives does the computer have?

1 hard drive, 1 DVD drive. Could you perhaps show me an example of a PCIe card that would do the trick?

this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132008 if u only need 2 sata ports or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132018 if u want 4 sata ports. But u will have to re install windows to install the drivers for the controller since there is no other way to boot into windows and install it then.
