Project: [Rage] - HAF 922 Build

What's up OCN?

I'm loving the community here and everybody's enthusiasm for computers, much like myself. Over the years, I've built a few cases and have thoroughly enjoyed picking out my own parts rather than having a computer manufacturer do it for me. So within the past few weeks, I've been thinking - I want to create a case that be my absolute dream - one that not only functions well (as I've always done in the past) but one that looks visually attractive.

This concept is fairly new to me as far as putting forth personal effort to make a case look appealing. So here's the plan:
-Order a case to mod (Poor case doesn't know what's about to happen)
-Install a window in the side panel to see the inner workings / LED's from the outside of the case looking in (Already own a handy Dremel)
-Get LED fans (unless case comes with it - even so, may still need additional fans)
-Sleeve the cables red/black combo (FurryLetters OR MDPC-X)
-Install case lighting effects (cathodes, LED's, whatever)
-Possibly try watercooling (Or I may just save myself the trouble and throw the case into a swimming pool to save time, eh?)
-Miscellaneous stuff to try (who knows, gotta be a little adventurous, right? )

This build will take place over the next several months, so if it sounds interesting, feel free to sub! Free cookies for those that do!

Stay tuned

Well the first step towards modding a case is to...well, have a case to mod! So I got a case today that I absolutely love and is within my budget. I decided on the HAF 922 from CoolerMaster. This case is roomy, and has some massive fans that came with it!

I've been thinking a lot about the color scheme of the case/LED's and I think I'm going to go with the infamous black and red combination. I know it's a little bit overused, but personally, most of my computers have been blue and black and I think it's time for a personal change haha.

So back to the case, the interior of the case is mostly the standard silver color (yuck!). I picked up some Krylon Fusion in flat black to paint with. I have several different types of sandpaper as well to help adhere the paint to the case.

Hopefully I will have some pics up by tomorrow...provided it doesn't turn into a complete disaster But if there's one good quality I have in myself, it is that I have a lot of patience. I'm going to start sanding tonight to get prep ready. Wish me luck!

Well I got the interior painting halfway done. I left the drive bays unpainted to check out how it would look - doesn't look half bad! But I'm pondering if I want to make them all black as well or just leave them the way they are.

No, it's not laziness, as I've said before, I have a lot of patience, but I'm not 100% sure what to do. Here's what it looks like now, let me know what you think. (Actually the bottom of the case under the HDD bays is also black, I had taken this picture before I painted it, so ignore that patch of silver on the floorboard xD)

Hey thanks for the subs!

So today another piece of this build - the sleeving!

I was debating between FurryLetters and MDPC-X, and in the end, I decided it would be cheaper to go with FurryLetters. So I got the cabling in today as well as heatshrink, and I know people complain about his 2:1 heatshrink, and I was set to get it from somewhere else but I saw he now offered 3:1, so I decided to try my hand at that.

This is my first sleeving victim - the 120mm fan from the rear of the HAF 922

Before sleeving, I of course have to remove the 3 pin connector at the end of the wires to slide the sleeves on (sorry for the blurry pics, I'm not great at taking pics)

I then slid the sleeving on and the heatshrink, got a little hairdryer which did the trick and got this

Full fan in its sleeved glory

I don't think I did a bad job sleeving, considering I've never done it before.

Now I have to sleeve my other fans and anything else I can get my hands on!

Macro mode. It may also be called Flower Mode if you have a point-and-shoot. That will help those close-up shots focus.

Well, I ordered and received a couple of extenders for the 24-pin power supply and a sata cable (just one for now to test how well it works). I will be using these once I get a motherboard and install it as well as a power supply (obviously).

As of right now though, money is a little tight, got some bills to pay, but within the next week or so, I'll be getting some more parts to order to play with.

Until then, I'm thinking maybe early next week (monday, tuesday) I'll see what I can do about doing a side window mod. I'm not exactly sure what I'll be doing, what shape I'll cut out or what but if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'd like to cut out [Rage] somewhere on the case as well and have a light behind it. No idea yet though. Thanks for your support so far peeps. I'll see if I can sketch up some side panel window ideas and post them on here!
