Intel Burn Test i950 temp 70 - 80c

Thread Starter
I have the i950 and the corsair H50 cooler and I heard that the H50 cooler is the best among other air cooler or seatsink, so I bought it. I followed the three stepping overclock guide, I was able to overclock to 3.75 with turbo mode and hyperthreading turned on. bclock is 170 and CPU core ratio set to 21...It is possible to set it to 23 to get 4.08. However, when I did the stress testing with intel burn test and set everything to max - 8 threads, 5 rams and all cores...the temp just went up pretty quickly from 42 - 43c if overclocked to 4.08, 40 - 41c if 3.75, to 70 - 80c within just a few minutes...I am not sure if this is normal. Hope somebody could enlighten me on this.

This is how I set up my H50 cooler. Since thermal paste is already applied on the pump(circular thing), so basically, there is no need to apply any extra thermal paste right? I installed only one fan, which was supplied by Corsair, the original package. I attached the intake side of the fan(which has the supporting pillar) to the radiator and then the exhausted side to the back of the case where the vent is located. Not sure if this is the proper setup, which is referred to push-pull.

I have the Azza case 1000, which is a stupid case, along with two graphic cards 6870 and two dvd burners and one bluray...Three internal harddrives as well. Board is the gigabyte X58A-UD3R version 2.

it's normal, and you were definitely misinformed, the h50 is a mediocre air cooler and you should not expect more than 4ghz from it, especially with stock fan.. looks like your temps are about right

I think you are being a bit harsh by calling the H50 "mediocre". While I certainly wouldn't say it's quite as good as the Noctua or Silver Arrow, I think it's definitely a top tier cooler.

I have the another corsair heatsink with two fans attached to it but because of the stupid case, the fan of the side panel that blocks the heatsink and I was unable to close the case, and therefore, I had to change and buy another heatsink.

So you guys meant 40 - 45 idle for 3.75 or 4.08 is normal right?
and stressing testing with intel burn test 75 - 80 is normal too?

I got about 80c in IBT with my H70 running a 980x @ ~4.6Ghz

1) Each chip is different.
2) Don't concern yourself with idle temps.
3) What are your ambient temps?
4) How much voltage are you pushing through? It's volts that cause heat, not clock.

Not true, its just that V raises temps quadratically. However @ stock VID a chip running 3Ghz is going to be cooler than one running 4Ghz

Hi. Perhaps I need to rephrase so you can understand.

It's voltage that actually matters when you reach higher clocks and, in nearly all cases, is the biggest factor in determining temperatures.

Get at least two fans and do a push-pull configuration.

H50/H70 isn't water cooling. Like someone mentioned, it is a mediocre air cooler at best.

H70 is on par with the best air coolers available. And I have no problem reaching 100% stability at ~4.6Ghz, without ever going over 80c in IBT.

And, um.., is there liquid in the H50/70, yes there is, logic dictates that it is liquid cooling.

Honestly I would like to see a Custom system with a Single 120MM radiator that performs better than the H70
