How does Sandy Bridge's GPU Work?

Thread Starter
Will it interfere with the actual processing? how can I make sure a game will use my discrete card(GTX 580) and not the CPU's GPU core?

Thanks.

You will only use the chips GPU if your on an H67 chipset and your monitor is actually plugged into mobo and not your video card.

So in other words the onboard GPU is going to be nothing but dead weight to 99.9% of people on OCN?

So P67 Motherboards will not even be able to use the chip's GPU?

That isn't likely true, people build HTPC systems using the onboard GPU.

That is correct, because that motherboard does not have video output of any kind.

I haven't seen a motherboard with HDMI out yet. It kind of defeats the purpose of a HTPC if you don't have HDMI. I guess you could do digital audio out and DVI but that is dumb if you ask me.

EDIT: Well I did some searching on Newegg and some of the small MBs do have HDMI. I guess I am just used to looking at full size ATX boards.

I've seen some pics of the new sandybridge MBs and some had a built in DVI port. I'm glad to see that VGA is finally going away. I've been tired of it wasting space on components and I swear if I get one more DVI to VGA adapter I'm going to snap... I've got a box full of those things. Every monitor and graphics card seems to come with one.

Yup looks like DVI only for the new Sandy Bridge boards. I read somewhere that the reason why they include those adapters is because VGA is still popular in Asia and other parts of Europe.

OT: For most users on OCN the Sandy Bridge CPU doesn't work. wink.gif

What do you mean doesn't work?

Also, couldn't they have made a parallel release of GPU-less chips with something to fill in that wasted silicon space?
