Running my new 1066 RAM at 1066 instead of 800!

Hi,

Please bear with me, I'm such a newbie with all this stuff! - any help would be really appreciated.

I currently have an ASUS P5N-D motherboard and recently swapped my 4x1gb sticks (800MhZ) to 2x2gb OCZ (1066Mhz).

I don't really have much of an idea of what I should be doing but....

I then went into the Bios and changed the the ratio from auto to unlinked, and this then allowed me to change the DRAM 800 number to 1066....

But unfortunately, when I booted up afterwards, I got strange little lines all over the screen and characters are messed up. On a 2nd reboot, the asus bios automatically put my speeds back to normal.

My CPU/fsb? is currently displaying at 1333 (multi x 7.5) meaning that I'm running at 2.5Mhz.

I then switched the ratio to LINKED and used the option 5:4.

This meant that my CPU was running at 1333 and the ram is 1066. - Perfect....except it's bloody useless considering the whole point of this was try and OC the PC to run at 3Mhz.

Surely I should be able to manually set my cpu at 1333 (default) and then set my DRAM as unlinked at 1066 and then allow the CPU to set it's own ratio. Am I missing something here?

Thanks

umm. Yes. I meant 3Ghz. Thanks for that. I wouldn't want anyone out there thinking I wanted to turn my machine into an unusable mess

In BIOS set all your RAM settings, including volts to Auto. Timings too. Then enable EPP (Enhanced Performance Profile) or XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) which ever is in your BIOS in the RAM settings section. That sets up all optimum settings for you, including volts for your RAM. Now you can't OC it from there because any change in BIOS to your RAM will disable EPP. But at least you'll be running at 1066 @5-5-5-15. Also you can only use 2 sticks, 4 sticks won't work. OCZ uses EPP so you should be able to enable it in BIOS. See pic. If you can't find the setting in BIOS check to make sure your RAM does use EPP. Corsair and all DDR3 RAM is now called XMP.
Here's a explanation.

NVIDIA and Corsair have announced an extension to the standard JEDEC RAM specification called EPP.

Standing for Enhanced Profile Protocol, it's an extra level of detail over the standard SPD included in the RAM. Memory modules typically contain details such as the name and rated speeds of the module. Under the EPP standard, detail is also included to cover voltages and the command rate of the modules.

There is also the ability to include different 'profiles' on the RAM - so one could be the standard timings for 800MHz and one could be slightly more lax timings to run at 1066MHz for overclocking. Corsair has designed the SPD to be compatible with upcoming motherboards. It is expected that boards featuring NVIDIA's next-gen motherboard chipset will include support for switching between profiles and easy overclocking based on the extra details included in the EPP.
