[TUAW]Apple's market cap passes $300 billion - Page 6

Some people like Apple, some other don't. Get over it...
It's a good company and their computers/phones/audio players can satisfy the vast majority of people... the only con is the price of their products though.

With apple you have to be very careful when you buy.
Their prices are settled for an entire year whilst technology does change.
If you buy your products at launch you have a 'reasonable' bang for buck. It might be slightly over priced compared to other manufacturers at the time (~$100 with regards to laptops) but this extra goes into the 'apple bonus'. In the laptop line things come to mind such as multi- touch, os-x, build quality and finally aesthetics.

Apple rules with innovation, remember the mouse was their idea!

Apple's products are usually of above average quality, and very good looking. And I'm not claiming that they are making bad products or simply copying others... but what I dislike is that they charge a large premium for their products (much more than the product is actually worth (especially in the case of Apple laptops, iMacs, Mac Pros and cinema displays)) and they destroy their competition to the fullest meaning of the word.

And there tendency to eradicate competition worries me...

Let's say I didn't like Microsoft? I'll get a Linux OS.
or that I didn't like Intel? I would get an AMD processor.
or that I didn't like ATI/AMD GPUs? Then I would get an nVidia GPU.
The point is I have a CHOICE and I like it that way.

But let's say I want to buy an MP3 player... do I really have an option other than an iPod touch? Not really, since Apple has crushed all competition there, and the MP3 player section of technology is literally dead. And that's what I particularly dislike about Apple.

To stir the pot some more, I think the reason why so many from OCN are Apple haters is because of price per dollar

We look for parts that will suit our specific needs (which is why 110% of people here build their own computers). And unless it's the absolute latest and greatest, we get it for the lowest possible price based off of its specs (and then we continue to stretch that buck by overclocking the ever-livin'-crap out of it). We tailor or hardware to suit us, not the other way around.

With Apple, you get what Apple thinks will suit you, especially software-wise. And if you don't like it, HAHA. Want widgets on your iPhone? Too bad. Wanna edit settings? It just works. Want better hardware? Buy a new one. It seems the only thing to distinguish your personal Apple device from the next is whatever background image Apple liberated you to choose. And prices are set in stone. What did the iPhone 4 launch at? Oh sweet, by now I bet it'll be half tha-

And to set the record straight, the only thing Apple should be credited as "innovative" for is their 99-cent music catalogue. Everything else was a work of fiction from the brilliant minds at Apple marketing. Seriously, they could sell ice to a polar bear (insert global warming irony). And as far as hardware innovation? what a joke. I challenge anyone to give me one electronic device that Apple has made that can be hailed as innovative. Apple doesn't make their own hardware, they contract it out to Samsung and Foxconn and a number of other companies. Apple is a software and media distribution company.

Apple is now seen as the premium brand. Just like GM pre-1980. They can roll anything off of their assembly belt and it'll get an undeserved praise in quality. Yet their hardware has yet to catch up with their prices. It's a cake walk to find laptops that match the MBP in specs at MB prices, or much less. And in production quality, they aren't anything special. They use cheap plastic (like most manufacturers) on their flagship MBP. Their phones crack and scratch much easier than competitors (shot at the iphone 4's design flaw, but nonetheless true). They can barely keep their MBA-line cool. It's catching up to them though, as the consumer has opened its eyes to Apple-alternatives: Galaxy S line of smartphones, Asus laptops, Amazon Music, etc. These alternatives will force Apple to lower its prices, which would forcibly take the respect of the techies. Until then, Apple will continue to force its close OSs while conforming to no standards but its own. Forcing developers to work that much harder to produce an app on a completely different platform.

maybe about just over a decade, Raytheon was using G3s as their workstations. Just letting you guys know, Apple did have a market even in the aerospace/defense-contractor market.

Now AutoCAD is coming back to the Mac platform. I would not be surprised if Apples are going to be used in engineering.

True to the max.

"It's reinventing...it"

IT'S CALLED A TABLET PC WE HAVE HAD IT FOR A LONG TIME

ALL THEY DID WAS MAKE A IPOD TOUCH BIGGER WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT RE-INVENTED MORONIC IDIOTS LUST FOR EXPENSIVE STUPID STUFF.

LCD tv's were revolutionary, yet tv's existed before, combustion engines were revolutionary yet steam engines existed before, rubber wheels were revolutionary yet wheels existed before, I can go on... ^^ LOL!!!

Are you really saying Apple is doing things right? So what your saying is, by this logic.

That everything else is doing it wrong.

Comparing them to these wonderful things lol.

Yes, HP sells plenty of PCs - but a large proportion of those are your typical $500 bargain basement lot. NPD did an analysis of this a while back and found that the average PC costs $515, and that Apple holds 91% of the $1000+ market, with the average Mac costing $1400.

What are you on about? The underpinnings of OSX were on the market long before Linus Torvalds penned his first line of code. Noone ripped off anyone - if anything Apple were the innovators with their various improvements to the user interface. (for example, I remember reading somewhere that the release of Aqua caused Microsoft to rethink the whole XP interface, otherwise it would have just ended up like 2k, visually)

Not sure where you're going there. Apple designs the electronics and contracts OEMs to build them - like many other companies, in fact. Would you say nVidia is not a hardware company? They are fabless, remember? They even release their own branded graphics cards nowadays.

The Macbook Pro has a unibody aluminium case - or have I missed something? Even the Macbook has a unibody case - which is from my experience far harder wearing.

Ok - how does Windows conform to standards that are not its own? I remember reading an interesting article that stated that docx at one point faced being removed as a standard since Microsoft wouldn't implement it properly.

Yes, coding for Mac is different to coding for Windows and even Linux. But that's not saying much, tbh. Mac is not Windows, Windows is not Linux. Each has its own methods of accessing the user.

Where does something get value from?

Ask yourself that. Work in a loop backwards, start with Apple's profit margins, go through the various OEMs, price of silicon and rare earth metals. Personally, I eventually got back to the worldwide availability of food.

There are quite a few around. If you want a basic media player, you may be slightly out of luck, but Samsung are meant to be releasing an iTouch-esque device based on the Galaxy S, and the Zune HD's meant to be pretty good.
