im sure if Sony never had Other OS it would have been cracked alot sooner but I guess everyone was focused on linux. if it works why replace it?

I dont think so.. The hackers have hacked every game console ever made and they hacked it fast. If the game console didnt have a cd/dvd player, then they wrote emulators to run the roms on pc's. Give me a break about them not trying to hack it until April 2010.. BS

Hackers have been trying to hack the PS3 from day one..

EDIT:: Also, who in the hell used linux on the PS3 anyways? I tried it and it was junk, although when i tried it, it was the first year the ps3 came out.. who uses linux for actual computing on game console..

Not epic fail. If it was so easy, they should have did whatever they did years ago..

well i dont think they were really trying to find anything when linux was still available for ps3. it's only been a little while since they removed it that they found a way of bringing it back.

People were trying to get full hardware access for Linux more than trying to break the system completely before Sony removed the OtherOS. With Geohot's hack of allowing RSX access there were still no pirated games for PS3. But once they removed OtherOS, then a lot more hacker started to hack it. And it's not like they can do anything about that because people just refuse to upgrade. If they haven't removed OtherOS, it'll still probably be hacked eventually, but it might've took longer and maybe it wouldn't have been this total compromise.

B.S. They have been trying since day one.. But when they sony removed linux, some hacker got pissed off and told his hacker buddies and started a riot amongst themselves against sony. They might have started trying a little harder, but dont be naive and think they started when sony removed linux support..

Ok - Sony did do an "epic fail" in their security.
But using your question: how many people in the world have been trying to hack the PS3 and the hours spent slaving over this...... yet everyone missed this epic fail until now and it's been what- 4 years?

I'd say that Sony isn't the one who failed here entirely. It's the hackers. Took them forever to figure out that, as per your example, that the same key is used to unlock every door. It's a skeleton key, and from what I gather, a blindingly obvious one. If it was such an "epic fail" of Sony, then why did it take so long to figure out until now?

I think the "epic fail" (I can't stand that phrase... I hope whomever spread it around dies a slow and painful death) that the hackers are mentioning is not how difficult it was or how long it took them to crack the console, but that once this ONE THING was discovered, it unlocked EVERYTHING (even uses the same method for the PSP) that was being hidden.

That's like you having one password for your PC, your banking site, every forum, every account you ever owned on any site using the same login information. It might be hard to figure it out, but once you have that one pass-code, you have access to absolutely everything.

How many modders know Cell programming? Very litte, and its hard to learn.
How many people have BR burners? Not many normal folks, so pirating won't spread.
And How easy is it to actually do the unlocking? This is unknown at the moment.

I think the main reason Cell is so hard to use is because its hard to utilise fully, not hard to code for.
Every PS3 has a HDD, you can run any code off a USB stick...Run one to put a custom version of the PS3s software on it and then put what you want on the HDD, no need for burnt BRs.
Shouldn't be harder than flashing a Xbox DVD drive or JTAGing it, but I doubt it will be as easy as jailbreaking an iPhone.

I don't know if anyone have time to download 50GB of data using a 3MB/1MB speed (average?) i'd rather buy the game then wait 1 weeks for a downloaded pirated game

Only PS3 exclusives would get close to that iirc.

Rip to HDD, PS2 can do that when you have a fat one and the HDD addon.
