Why don't timings matter any more ?

CL is the time it takes between the CPU asking for data from the memory and the latter returning it, right ?

So... say... DDR2 CL 5 vs DDR4 CL 13

That would mean that the CPU has to wait 2.6 times longer for the data to return.
Doesn't that sound like lower timings are at least a little important ?

EDIT : Oh, I realize the memory speed is going to compensate for that (partially?).

You are assuming that the memory is the performance bottleneck.

i.e. Upgrading from 1066 to 1600MHz does not make a system 50% faster.

timings do matter and always will

given the proper context.

The goal of computing isn't to compute things VERY VERY FAST, it's to compute a HUGE, COMPLEX thing in a reasonable amount of time.

as such, most architectures prioritize bandwidth over latency(do 10x the work in the same time period, but the time period is unchanged as compared to last years)

latency is the issue here. Timings measure the number of cycles required to perform a function as such if at a given timing the number of cycles(Hz) DOUBLES, the timings can also double and latency remains unchanged. Admittedly with technology changes things become a bit trickier, but the idea is similar across generations.

DDR1 400 2-2-2
DDR2-800 4-4-4
DDR3-1600 8-8-8

latency hasn't really changed(heck it's trended downward, DDR1-400 2-2-2 was considered phenomenal(BH-5), DDR2 4-4-4 was pretty common and I had kits that did 3-3-3(d9) and DDR3 is hitting 2000+ 8-8-8ish(basically everything, hyper, d9 etc))

Im more interested in the fact that Samsung has been the one to develop all of the DDR modules. I never in a million years would have guessed that.
