(b) Upgrade the 9650 to the SB and then the i7 to IB

What do you think?

I haven't seen enough about the level of improvement of SB over the 9650.

Just how long do you think that socket will last?

If your rig does what you need it too and can handle everything you throw at it there isn't a problem..

Intel Core i7 980x. i7 990x, and now the i7 995x. 1366 still is a good option for some people. The K series is also becoming a good option too.

i7 920 & 930 are great to this day even, IMO. But if you're in the market for a replacement for the 930, then of course, Sandy Bridge is obviously the right choice.

SB is MUCH faster than 1366 especially when over clocked...

Go read the Anandtech reviews, Guru3D, Ars Technica... The $317 SB beat the $1000 six-core in many render, multi- and single-threaded benchmarks and tasks.

Not saying you should upgrade because well, 1366 is more than enough to last through the foreseeable future especially if all you do is game. But to say that SB isn't an upgrade over Bloomfield is just not true.

I personally would not go for the jump. I do feel that you can get your i7 over 3.5GHz though, even though you have a C0. Is it the i7 940 you are talking about?
It isn't just a few hundred extra megahertz... because the Sandy Bridge architecture is different, and using a different socket is more future proof then going with the former platform.

A $1000 chip is not a good option, if you need that power wait for a 6/8 core cpu because you're just throwing money away buying a 980x now.
