No, I'm feeling much better since I've gotten to 3.6. I know that's arbitrary, but it's how I feel. Plus, I feel better since someone posted the clock for clock stuff showing ~10% in favor of SB in games. While it is significant, it isn't enough to make me cry. I'm in the it'll be okay camp now. I think I was in either the big mistake or I'm a loser camp when I started the thread.

btw, what value were you referring to when you said 400? I still don't get that one.

Hehe, I'm going to play the devil's advocate here.

While the difference might only be 10% clock for clock, it seems around 4.4~4.5 GHz is pretty much a guaranteed easy oc on the K chips. Assuming you can only get 4.4 GHz on SB, factoring in that it's 10% faster clock for clock, that's equivalent to your Bloomfield running at 4.84 GHz. Heck, even if you only get 4 GHz, that's still equivalent to a 4.4 GHz Bloomfield. 4.4 / 3.6 = 24.4% faster and 4.84 / 3.6 = 34.4% faster. If your SB can go up to 5 GHz (seems to be doable with Vcore@1.5V), 5.5 / 3.6 = 52.8%.

That said, it'll be too much hassle to replace your rig with Sandy. If you replace it, you'll probably want to wait a month or two for the reported bugs to be ironed out. I say just enjoy what you have and upgrade when you actually need to. It's not like searching the internetz for pr0n would be made faster by a 4.4 GHz Sandy Bridge CPU.

BCLK. Lower the CPU and RAM multiplier to their lowest settings so you can find the BCLK limit on the board.

What x58 board has been to 400 bclk? Isn't the limit for all of the best x58 boards about 220?

I meant the 400 (133x3) you already calculated. Just reiterating that something else is amiss because 3.5ghz is an easy marker with such a high multi on these chips. Did you try 8:9 (memory:uncore)? I read somewhere the x58s like that ratio.

I think "much faster" is a little too strong isn't it? I mean as far as human perception goes. I mean everything on my current system flashes up instantly, there is no waiting now for me as it is. It's almost like there is no way I can imagine it possible any system could be much faster than mine, everything is more or less instantaneous.

But for something like a folding rig, SB would be interesting, I would love to be able to fold at 5 GHz with a good cooler, the frame times would be sweet...

Thanks for the explanation, next time I encounter the 124 BSOD I'll try that 8:9.

PS - Something is amiss, I am an X58 noobie!

Ive got a work league bball game tonight so I wont have time for much. I'll probably take a shot @ 159 X 23. I am such a noob for having to take such baby steps. 2mhz on bclk, wooo.

I'm sure that ssd helps a ton. Software developers need to get on the ball and utilize this stuff. As far as games go, I guess we're at the mercy of consoles these days. When the next generation of consoles comes out, the games will start utilizing more of the resources that have been available to them all along on pc.

Pretty much all boards can get to 220, most are capable of more, up to a maximum of 270 bclk or so with the right cooling.
But clock for clock sandy bridge is faster, the only advantage bloomfield has is extreme cooling, but looks like even a frozen 920 will have trouble keeping up to a 2600k. On air...
