C2Q 8300 Install Failure

Thread Starter
Hi.

I'm sorry this isn't exactly about overclocking (though I'm no stranger), but I figured if anyone's likely to know what's wrong, that person is probably around here.

The system listed on my profile is the one in question here. I've literally just bought a Core 2 Quad 8300 2.5GHz for a machine from 2005. Yes I know it sounds strange, but all my research and the salesperson's assurance told me a) it would be compatible and b) I could install and use it with no problems.

So here I'm looking forward to upgrading and...two problems.

The first and most noticeable is that the provided heatsink doesn't fit. It's too big. So I'm using the stock 2.5A heatsink+fan assembly instead of the 0.2A mini one included with the C2Q. I should probably note that when I removed the old processor, the machine had been on 24/7 for five days and it was barely warm.

The second and worst problem is that when I powered it on for the first time, everything went to hell (far as I can tell). The motherboard light is on and the drives start up, as does the GPU and the PCI wireless card...but the CPU fan does more than just start up, it airplanes like nothing I've seen before. Scared the hell out of me the first time, so I cut AC. Three more trials, three more airplanes. I wanted to see how long it would last, but no, it just kept getting faster and faster until the fan hit its 12,000-or-so RPM limit and I cut the power again.

Blah indeed.

Nothing but the GPU is overclocked. The previous Pentium 4 isn't overclocked (it can't be, really, the FSB is all but locked). The power supply is overkill, perhaps, but it's also future-proof and gave me no problems before. In fact, everything was humming along fine until I decided it was time to upgrade.

Okay, what on earth did I do wrong? I bought a Socket 775 processor for a Socket 775 motherboard, put it in, fastened everything, et cetera. It should work. Everything I read and was told says it should work, but all it does is wreak havoc on the fan...which I barely heard while running a P4.

Any ideas?

(I've been lurking here for awhile now, but never actually registered til today, if you were wondering...)

Just because it's a socket 775 motherboard doesn't mean it can support all socket 775 processors. There are several chipsets released for LGA-775 and most of the older ones don't support Core 2 processors. A search on Google netted the following information:
Quote:
Dell Dimension 8400
Chipset: Intel 925X Express or Intel 925XE Express
That salesperson just lied to you about the Q8300 being compatible.

Hmm, I'm now thinking Intel releasing a new socket for Sandy Bridge is a good idea. If they can't use old motherboards for it anyway, might as well release a new socket to avoid confusion such as the above case.

Argh.

I thought I'd covered everything before I even went to the store...I knew the 800MHz FSB would be a bottleneck, knew it would run my 32-bit OS, knew it would fit in the physical socket.

And yet, you're right...I missed the chipset. Seems I need G33+, P35+, Q33+, or X38/48 Express. Now I'm wondering if I should just buy a new motherboard or return the damn thing.

Ah well...thanks for the answer. I guess that pretty much seals it.

Yes I definitely agree with your last point...

Edit: how on earth did you know I have an 8400? (or, what used to be a stock 8400)?

old motherboards *CANNOT* support the Core 2 processors. whether it be core 2 duo or core 2 quad.

youre going to have to invest in at least a P35 chipset motherboard. (there are other chipsets, but P35 is the first decent one i would personally recommend) P45 is best though if you want to oc it to its full limit.

The motherboard isn't the only thing he'll have to buy. From memory, the older Dell Dimensions used the BTX form factor so there's practically no motherboard that will fit his case.

Eh I don't care about the motherboard that much. This old one still works, as does the processor.

I'm glad you people know more than, say, salespeople. And me. I don't know how I overlooked chipset and didn't account for age!

I'm building my own system, obviously, given my frustration with everything proprietary about Dell and the like. In fact, the PSU and GPU in my current Dimension system are meant for the custom one I've yet to build. I just wanted to use 'em now.

Also I don't wanna retrofit a mobo in this case. You're right about the obscure form factor. It's tiny and restricts airflow (to the point I removed the sound card so the GPU could breathe...!) so I'll just invest in something better. Good thing what I wanted is cheaper now that Sandy Bridge is out.

Ok. Thanks for the help all...off to make a return, I suppose.
