I have a 955, I bought within a few weeks of hitting the shelves, so I'm not too tempted to go after the new 975, but for those who do have older AM3 processors or those who have AM2 processors on AM2/3 mobos, this is definitely a good thing.
i'm not so impressed by the 840, considering the X4 640 is about the same (but then i didn't read the review all the way and i can't find comparisons to the x4 640 - i base all this on price alone)

come on... getting a quad for $100 isn't a bad deal.

This isn’t necessarily a response to Sandy Bridge –that’s coming in a few months- but rather an attempt by AMD to flesh out their Q1 2011 lineup with two parts that are cut from very different pieces of cloth.
it's even linked in the OP. Bulldozer is out later this year.

what is it with people? Sandy Bridge comes out and now all of a sudden the still current AMD crop of CPU's is a complete waste of money and always has been?

and before you ask, i would have bought the i3 2100 or whatever its called if it was out when i was buying

Phenom II 840 should be called Athlon II X4 650

Why AMD is using phenom name for a processor that lack L3 cache ? The older PII 800 series had 4MB L3 cache

Why do you say that? 4.1, almost 4.2 on air seems like a very solid overclock...

I cant believe how long is taking AMD to bring something that makes me want to try them again...I was an avid AMD fan since I got my first Tbird 1.4 all the way to phenom 965 but after that I couldnt take it anymore...I hope they bring something to level the performance playing field soon.

I was thinking the same thing. Doesn't make much sense.

Doesn't the 840 have only 4MB L3 cache instead of no cache? No cache = Athlon II.
The x4 840 being at 3.2Ghz also doesn't match AMD's numbering scheme.

EDIT: looked at the CPU-Z screenshots, looks like it is true the x4 840 is not an L3 cache-bound processor at all. I wonder what's the difference between this and an Athlon II.
