Really slow USB external drive?!

Thread Starter
I am having problems with an external drive that a mate gave me to put some files on for him. The transfer rates are at 2.77 MB/Second and as I am moving 243GB over this will take forever. I have tried the drive on 3 computers and in all the ports. I have used the same type if not even same model number of the drive to copy a huge file over before and it was fine at the normal USB 2.0 rate but for some reason this one does not want to go faster than the above?!

It's sending me insane, what can it be? If it were broken it would not work at all would it?

Can anyone help me?

TIA
Adebisi

open the thing up take the drive out and pop in in your rig while you transfer the files.

the only thing you could think of doing would be changing the USB cable. Try that to see if it works -- it would be odd if a platter drive was to slow down that much and not be broken. If it doesn't, I think you'll probably have to bear with it.

@nukefission, flash drives can have wildly different transfer rates, but he said that he has the exact same model drive and his drive is faster than his friends... so it's something strange going on, and not just a difference between 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm or write speeds

Might want to ask your friend if he's ok with you doing that first and might not be worth the time... leave it on overnight, you should have quite a bit finished just over USB

If it's a seagate/maxtor drive, you'll be sending that drive off for RMA, it's toast. My maxtor 160GB portable did the same thing, it was replaced under the 3 year warranty.

if its as simple as a few screws then i would do it but if you actually have to crack it open then maybe its best to just leave it go and maybe it will be done in a few weeks.

I left it transferring last night but it had a I/O error and stopped transferring and world not restart after choosing to skip the file it was on. Does that sound like a defective drive?

Thanks for the replies by the way
