Thread Starter
I am going to make a computer for my mom who mainly watches tv (flash and dvd) and checks her email. she uses microsoft office 2007 and is used to windows 7. I want to build her something that will last like 5 years.
so here is what i have
-Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=035016
-AMD Athlon II X3 445
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=035103
-OCZ Gladiator (92mm version) or a CM Hyper TX3
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=020646
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=024384
-Crosair XMS3 Classic 2GB kit (2 x 1GB)
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=014250
-Thermaltake V4 Black Edition
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=032590
-LG GH22LS50 lightscribe SATA drive
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=024839
-spare 300w psu
-spare 80gb and 120gb ide drives

I have $300 give or take $20

Just wondering does anyone have this board and does it unlock hidden cores
and does this prossesor have any hidden cores at all.
Thanks In Advance

Yes, the board unlocks cores, and yes, the CPU unlocks to an X4 B45.

I'd say go with this board, Biostar boards are solid and you'd have a better chance of unlocking cores with it too.

Edit: Then again i'm biased towards Biostar

What you have listed is fine.
Should be a nice build once done and don't sweat the board itself, it's as good as anything out there for her useage. Gigabyte boards are solid pieces of hardware in my experience and I even have one that's over 10 years old (Socket A board) and still works great for what it is, plus a 754 board ( GA K8NS NF3-250) I've put through the wringer - It still as well as it ever did to this day.

It's a solid build you put together. Should be fine for your mom's everyday use.

How would it go from being an AMD Athlon ii to being a Phenom II does it just recognize it as a Phenom II B45 or does it actually have the same power as a Phenom II???

The Rana's are Deneb's (Phenom X4's) with L3 Cache locked and a single core disabled (mostly due to instability's at certain frequencies in the Cache/Core).
Sometimes you can successfully unlock both the Cache and extra core, making it a full-blown Phenom (at 3.1GHz it'd be a theoretical 950, between the 945 and 955). Sometimes you only unlock the core and not the L3 Cache, so it'd be an Athlon X4, no matter what it says in CPU-Z about being a Phenom.

Only if the L3 is there, is it a true Phenom.

However, if it unlocks, it'll likely Overclock less and heat up more (thanks to L3/Extra core), than if it were left as standard. But well worth it if you get the unlock.

The Rana's are Deneb's Propus's (Phenom X4's)with L3 Cache locked with a single core disabled (Due to instability's at certain frequencies in the Core or to meet sales).
The chip may show up as a Phenom x4 even though it is a Propus (Athlon 2, this is a simple detection error and has no effect on performance). However the Propus and the Deneb perform essentially the same except Propus benches around 5-8% slower due to a lack of L3.

Very few people got Deneb chips with early Rana's, however I have not seen anyone get a Deneb on the later Rana models as I believe they wised up to unlocks. I'd give it a 75% shot at unlocking the core, I'm 3 for 3.
AMD, I give up.

The RAM is a ripoff as with all 2x1GB kits and as with all 1333 9-9-9 kits.
Have you considered shopping at NCIX? Assuming you shop CanadaComputers because you're in Ontario, NCIX has local stores in the Toronto area and will price match to CanadaComputers or other stores. I find they have excellent service & support. They usually also have better prices to begin with: take RAM, for example. For only $7-8 more you can get G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 9-9-9 1.5V 2x2GB.

one of the things that I am wondering is if the 92mm gladiator is better than the tx3... I have a tx3 on my dad's computer (AMD Athlon 3500+) and it gets 42 degrees Celsius on full load with 3d mark 06 and I think that that's good but the gladiator has 4 heat pipes so if anyone can tell me which one is better that would be very helpful.
Thanks
