THE best AM2+ Mobo

Thread Starter
Well my motherboard went belly up when I was trying to overclock it. I need am2+ because I'm too cheap to buy new ram. I've been really wanting to play some games and I almost went for a ps3 or 360 but if I can get my computer going again for about $100 I'll definitely do that since I have spent hundreds already on games for pc.

So here are the AM2+ mobo's on newegg that have amd northbridges. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007625%20600007945%20600008296&IsNodeId=1&name=AMD Considering the stuff I already have (965, 2 x 2gb ddr2, 1 5850) and no plans to upgrade what would be the best board to get? I've seen other threads about what am2+ board to get but they are pretty old so I'd like some help in deciding what is the best price/performance board out there to this day?

I want the best northbridge which to my understanding is the 790x but alot of the ones on newegg are 785 and 780 any big difference? I would really like something with onboard graphics this time around. I might do a very slight over clock to 3.8. I don't plan on doing xfire so I'll just use the old 5850 until I upgrade to the biggest and the best.

Thanks! and extra internet points if you can recommend a good air heatsink for my 965. I like water cooling but it's a pain and since my mobo died I'm looking for something low maintenance that I can give to my sister later on when I upgrade to bulldozer and build a whole new computer.

I'd go with the motherboard he ^ suggested. With you having a Phenom II it makes trying to find a good AM2+/AM3 motherboard harder. That one seems to be the only one with graphics, SATA 3, and AM3.

For the Heat sink I have no idea, I'm not good with them, I have the H50 so I'm good. Sorry though,

Thank you very much. That cooler seems to be pretty good for a really cheap price. I was also considering that board over the gbyte.

Thanks anyway. I had the H50 a long time ago. I also had a xigmatek 1284 (4 direct touch heatpipes) and I was not impressed with the H50's cooling ability at all compared to the xigmatek. Too bad it doesn't look like newegg sells the xigmatek 1284 anymore. Just the 1283.

what bout this?

I spent about 20 min going back and fourth between that and the asus that was recommended above. They are pretty much exactly the same board. Only big difference I noticed is that on the gbyte the sata ports will be blocked by a gpu while the asus was smart enough to place the sata ports closer to the edge avoiding being blocked by the gpu. Other than that they are exactly the same even down to the accessories you get with them.

Since I just killed my old gbyte bored I'm a bit iffy. I remember comparing my gbyte to my friends asus board and the gbyte was better quality IMO. It felt more solid and the blue pcb is nicer than the brown pcb asus uses. I guess it's still a toss up between which one to get.

at this moment its only up to u... i bought this gigabyte just now on the fact that more people gave this thing 5 stars and the reviews across the internet is giving it high ranking for a cheap board. and yea the GPU will eat up SAta ports with a GPU but only 3 of the 5. thats leaves u with 2 left ( all i need ) (idk bout u)

also another difference is that for the CPU port, there is a 8 pin for the gigabyte the asus only uses a 4 pin...

also the 24 pin connector is higher up for me that would be a plus cuz my cable holes on my case r higher up = more ease for cable management

I'm running one of these puppies in my sig rig with a 24/7 OCed unlocked X4 @ 3.6GHz. This board is rock solid and is well laid out.

yep thats the one i sent thx1138, and u have a GPU that blocks the sata. now if u r trying to raid with like 4 HDD's then go for asus lmao but if u got 1 sata HDD and drive reader go with this... also from the pics the gigabyte south bridge and northbridge heat sink are larger

also distance between CPU and RAM are further on asus...

i just ordered a 6870 and the 785 gigabyte with MX - 2 thermal paste

and will be running a 940 black edition

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to help me make up my mind. I just ordered the hyper 212 and the gbyte mobo. I decided to go with gbyte again because I know what kind of quality to expect and I also like the fact the stock chipset coolers were larger. The small mobo is going to look very funny in my new haf 932 lol but I look forward to having a functional gaming rig to hold me over until bulldozer. Thanks!
