Phenom II x4 940 on an AM2 mobo

Thread Starter
I've currently got a 940 and a Biostar A780L motherboard. I'm looking to get a different motherboard because this one has a few problems, namely it has a defective PCI slot, it's not that great for overclocking, and due to it's mATX layout everything is really cramped. My friend just did a major overhaul to his system and is getting rid of his motherboard, a socket AM2 Asus (don't remember exact model) from around 2006 if I remember correctly. I was thinking about using it for a while until I have the cash to buy a new motherboard. So what I was wondering is if my AM2+ CPU would be bottlenecked by the AM2 socket.

can be bottle knecked by a socket, u cant put the CPU into a AM3 socket nor anthing less... so it has to AM2..

look at this :

You may get a slower HT link from the AM2 socket. Depending on how good the board is I would also recommend the upgrade, hopefully to something with 8+1 power phase at least to power that 125W 940.

you can use am2+ and am3 compatible boards, I my self use a M4a77d for my cpu.
it cost about 100$

Just an update, I talked to my friend today and he said the motherboard is a Asus m2n32-sli Deluxe. Looked at the Newegg page for it and it seems pretty damn nice considering its age.

The M2N32-sli is a great board, and you will have no trouble using the 940 in it.

see data sheet here http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...m2n32-sli.html.

Grab it quick But don't show your buddy that data sheet, he may keep it if he see's you can run 965/955/970's on it

Good luck

Gyro

ps, drop by that same club thread if need further assistance, alot of us still rocking with this board.

Got another question, as far as overclocking and stability, would I be better off getting the M2N32 or this?
My friend said he wants $50 for his mobo.

MSi Mobos - in my experience - are not good. Stay away. See this link, and then look on google for this issue. It is very common:
