GTX 470 vs HD 6870

Thread Starter
I can't really decide between the two. I know that 6870's thermal and TDP specs are better then 470's, but I've always used nvidia graphic cards, and I've heard from a lot of people that ati's drivers suck. Reading some reviews I've noticed that 470 is only slightly faster in most of the games, and that it actually overclocks pretty well, which means a lot 'cause I'm always for getting the best performance out of components.
Hope you can help me get through this dilemma.

The 470. Ati drivers work just fine But the 470 is a better card.
From what I have read the 6870 will overclock better and has better performance at higher resolutions. I'm pretty confident the scaling in xfire will yield better performance over the 470 in SLI. I have neither so this is just from info I have read. I'm sure I can dig up the links a little later.

As for drivers. I have used both NVidia and ATI and I have not had problems with either. Most problems I see with ATI is that people are updating the latest drivers that they don't need and find bugs/issues with the newer drivers/older cards.

I was in the same situation a few weeks back and am now planning on buying the 6870 soon

Crossfire v SLI

Single Card

The 6870 is about 30 bucks cheaper on average and is PCI-E 2.1 x 16 (Fermi is 2.0 x 16)

That's all I got for right now. Hope it helps.

EDIT: Also what chipset are you running? If it's an nvidia chipset you will need the hack if I'm not mistaken (someone will clarify for me please)

470 for raw performance / PhysX / CUDA

6870 for noise / heat / price.

i'd get the 470 but you can't really lose either way

I have a 470 and I'm oc'd at 771/1542/1950 and I love it and all, but the noise and heat is pretty crazy even in my HAF X case. I'd say go for a 470 but if you can get just a little bit more money get the 570 to solve all the afore mentioned issues.

@AMD King: I'm pretty certain I won't use SLi or CF. As for the chipset, I'm considering this gfx card for my new pc, which will be using P67.
@mtbiker033, Sp1nalT4p: 570 is out of my budget. I would probably have to buy a cheaper case and PSU to get 570, and I'm really not for that.

Keep eyes peeled for 470 deals. They've been down to $160 for reference and the Galaxy GC has been $200.
