Replace 775 Mobo OR Upgrade, if so which route?

Thread Starter
My 9450 has been chugging along for some time now.. But I've passed/missed out on a few CPU cycles. As we're in the verge of a new cycle what do you think is the best route for me?

Replace my GA-X48-DS5 on the cheap?

OR

Upgrade CPU, RAM, and MOBO? i5? i7? Xeon? chipset?

I mainly use my PC for photoshop, usenet, and light gaming. I'm looking for the best bang for the buck. My budget is $600 and I'm open to buying the CPU or RAM used from our FSW.

Thanks in advance for taking the time, I've just missed too much to make a good decision on a new but dated combo.

I've been thinking about an 1156.. I don't plan on doing dual GPU but I sure would like the HP and RAM for PS. My other concern is what SB prices might do to the market. I hate looking at used i7-920s around $200 knowing if a MicroCenter is near the seller they might be making money..

I'd like some specific named hardware recommendations as well. I've been really looking at the i7-950/W3550. But I'm very open to recommendations.

I've been thinking about that too.. For the sake of this thread I'd like to focus on new purchases.. In reality I may go for a combination utilizing new & old. I'd prefer not to buy a used mobob or RAM but I'm open to a deal.

What's wrong with the seller making money? As long as the buyer is getting the product he or she wanted at the price that he or she wanted there is no wrong in pricing.

I'd wait till Intel comes out with 1 one universal socket like the 775 or AMDs AM2/3 or AMDs bulldozer there is still some good life left in that core 2 quad and i would wait it out but, i guess say that in hopes of getting a bulldozer my self thats why i'm still holding on to this crummy foxconn mother board and quad core that runs too hot.

then you'll be waiting a long time. Intel loves their socket changes ( bastards )

We don't know what BD will bring and when.

A Sandy Bridge base build can fit a $600 budget

2600k - $317 - $217 for a 2500k
Mobo - $150- $200
RAM - 4 GB $50, 8 GB $100

Frankly, I'm starting to think not retaining LGA-1156 is a good idea. If Intel couldn't make Sandy Bridge chips compatible with earlier 5-series motherboards, what's the point of sticking to socket LGA-1156? You'd still need to buy a new motherboard. You can reuse the coolers and RAM with LGA-1155, anyway.

By moving to a new socket, Intel can avoid problems such as this:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...l-failure.html

If Sandy Bridge were released for LGA-1156 but the older motherboards don't support them, can you imagine how much more of a headache it'll be for lay people who buy their parts from Fry's, etc, and rely on the advice of salespeople there? Sure, there may be some who know not to pair H55/H57/P55 motherboards with Sandy Bridge but I bet the majority won't know that.
