Dissapointed with AMD II X4 640

Thread Starter
This thread is devoted to all those who bought a Propus core and are crying about the poor OC-ability.

If you live in a large city with a Micro Center you know you where tempted by the ad in the 4th quarter advertising this processor at a reduced price $99.99 + a Free motherboard. Some of us have been overcome by this temptation and have been more disappointed than pleased with the result.

The AMD Athalon II X4 640 is a true Propus core with no hidden unlockable cache but it does boast of C3 stepping which gave us budget overclockers a shimmer of hope. I did my homework, I thought by the reviews I read for the 640's OC-ability and was a little giddy at what I found. The main review I based my purchase on can be found here at Overclockers Club which seemed pretty reasonable. Quad core @ 3.75 Ghz that is able to operate at 1.44 Vcore for just $99.99 - whats not to love.

So I get the processor and mobo home and the free Mobo is junk. Incapable of really doing anything above 3.3 Ghz. So I replace with a much larger, better fitted MSI NF980-G65(and yes I am aware the Nforce chipsets don't oc well). Here I start a little thread because I was frustrated that the highest I could go was 3.4Ghz without upping the voltage. Come to find out I am not the only one having difficulty getting some extra Juice out of this chip. We applied new settings and got up to 3.6Ghz stable.

If you too have purchased this processor and have been as Underwhelmed as I have with its OC-ability feel free to post your information and woes in this thread.

At the top of your post give us some basic information about your set up
Max Stable OC:
Max Bootable OC:
Processor:
Mobo:
Ram:
Vcore:
VNB:
Vram:
Core Clock:

I really would like to leave this open for anyone with the an Athalon II X4. However you 620 guys seem to be getting better results, chime in if you must

A quad core processor for $99 is an amazing deal, and you even got it to 3.6GHz! That's a damn good overclock in my opinion. Why cry because you can't get 3.75 stable?

Also, did you get permission to mark this thread as [Official]?

Maybe so. My expectations are probably ridiculous but I want 3.75Ghz.

It is probably you to be honest.Nvidia boards are different than AMD's.Your NB volts should be around 1.4v and there is also the I.M.C. voltage which needs to be slightly less than CPU v-core-my Asus geforce board listed this as VDDNB voltage. There are many, many things that affect an overall overclock, you have to go through everything to get it right. Most Athlons average a 3.7 Ghz clock I would say.

I think your CPU/NB voltage is too low in both cases. Up to around 1.4V.
