NZXT Phantom LED Swap - Page 2

Silo, that looks amazing. Can you post some pics of the entire case put together? And did you get Red LED Fans as well? I'm getting the White Phantom, also, but I wasn't sure how good/bad the Red would look on it, overall.

How long did it take you to swap those out?

I will when the project is complete Melee. I plan on going for a black/white/red theme for the build. As of now I do not have a complete system . As far as the fans go, yes I will be doing one of three things a. buying NZXT fans and adding red leds to them b. finding another company that sells red lit black and white fans, or c. waiting for NZXT to put out pre-lit red led fans. Once its all together I will post more pics here and on NZXTs site.

Honestly it took about an hour. Thats once I got everything I needed to do the project and finally got started. I took my time being very careful not to ruin the fan controller. The power/reset buttons took about 20 minutes.

That sounds great, Thanks! smile.gif

I actually spoke with NZXT yesterday and they said they would have their LED Fans out sometime early-middle of the year which is pretty vague and makes me sad. lol Unfortunately, their 200mm fans are the only ones that fit inside the Phantom. Other brands will not line up with the holes in the case. They sell the 200mm fans in plain white, but none with LED's which makes no sense to me since they have to produce them for the cases, anyways.

However, I read through a thread on the NZXT forums the other day that said it's extremely easy to just attach some LED's to the regular fans since they already have pre-designed slots for them. I would definitely look into that since you did such a great job on the difficult part already.

How do the red lights look on the white case so far?

If you've never soldered before then I don't suggest you start now when you're working on something fancy and neat. Do you understand electronics? One LED is not replaceable for another readily. They can have different voltages, forward currents, etc. I replaced the green LED's in my NZXT Tempest with blue, and that was quite easy (as I have 13 years electronics experience), but it did require a resistor and LED change. If you don't match the resistor to the LED you'll either place extra load on the LED (the equivalent of over-clocking, it'll get warm and have a lower life span), or won't light up as bright. Just food for thought... Have a electrotech friend help you if possible.

Wow, what an *******.....lol j/k biggrin.gif Nah, I understand completely and that was my fear from the very beginning. It's not that I have anything against blue, as I said. I think blue looks great on pc's. It's just a bit overdone and I think red looks more original and badass. tongue.gif If it's extremely difficult and most likely impossible for me to do, then I won't touch it.

The red lights look alot better than the blue ones as far as I'm concerned. Seeing as how there is going to be no blue in my theme it was a must. I took alot of time and asked alot of questions about this project as to keep from having to replace the fan controller.

Oh, and the 200mm fans from NZXT seem to be the only ones that have the predrilled holes for leds. With that said there is an excellent tut showing how to add leds to fans http://www.overclock.net/case-mods-general-discussion/529361-how-install-leds-fans.html. Even shows you how to install the resistor inline. Good luck to you man. IMHO its well worth it. looks awesome!

And yes the first one works as well, just didnt have another fan on hand. The power/reset leds we're switched out as well but this system is still waiting on parts so I couldnt use them. Fans are next =) Enjoy

Oh and btw, Quarker is correct as far as the power/reset leds go, but the leds on the fan controller are connected directly to the pcb. You will in fact need to desolder and remove the blue led housing in order to replace them. I did however cut the power/reset leds from their wires, solder the reds on then heat shrunk wrapped the connections
Subbed and +rep because i might give this a go soon, might go with the V8 in mine

Melee going to run down to radio shack and grab some more leds. I'm going to replace the blues in the 200mm and add some to the rest of the stock fans. Hell may even grab a cheapo 140mm for the front while I'm out just for this. Going to place my old rig into the case and take shots tonight to show off the entire case with red leds.

Welp, I've gone as far as I can go for now. I need to order the rest of the fans and wait until Thursday for Radio shack to restock. Hope you like. I'm very please with the outcome. Going to show some of the 200mm work as well as the the end result for the day.

Since there was no clear way to check for which was positive and negative with the wiring I did a mock-up
foto0074.jpg

Sorry for the blurry pics, my camera sucks. Btw if you attempt this, be very careful not to trim the wires too short. You dont get alot of wiggle room here.

And now the end result. Tell me what you think?
