Low cost server?

Okay here is what i need it to do for say under 500$

Run a low end website, ( its local in about 8 towns, including peoria IL, still not that big )

and somehow transfer files between owners, so if we update a menu item, instead of email we can just upload it to the server, and they can all download it from the server.....

i was future proofing it, and going with say a quad-core with 4 gigs of ram, a 100 gig HDD (small files we wont need more then that ).... but where to search and would this do?

Sounds pretty good like that, but you mentioned a 100GB HDD. I hope you didn't mean an IDE drive, because I don't recall any SATA 100GB drives being available except SSD's. I'll put up a list for you on Newegg, gimme a few minutes. And do you only need help with hardware, or are you also looking for software help? I didn't quite understand your post .

is what im looking at

And im not sure about software because my boss ( also my brother ) said he might be getting something for the web server aspect of it, but he also wants a file transfer service, i know the very basic of windows server 2008 R2 as i have it for my self, but i dont know much about it, so for right now just hardware...

As listed above it only has 2 gigs of DDR3 Im sure this is good enough for what i have going, and i can always add more, but not sure if it will run R2 or not...

If you're looking at OEM systems, definitely get this Dell, and configure it with 2x2GB of RAM and a keyboard and mouse combo. It'll come down to $506, but it'll have a 250GB hard drive, quad-core CPU (You could upgrade to a hyperthreaded CPU later), 4GB of DDR3 RAM(Supports up to 16GB), and a better warranty than what you found (IMO. I like Dell's services). Dell servers have a very nice price to performance ratio compared to HP and IBM.

Alright, I've set up something for you. With this build, the focus is on upgradeablity since you have a relatively low budget. What's in the server now is really plenty, and will last you a long time as a webserver and file server, but when the need arises, you can upgrade to a 6-core CPU and 16GB of RAM, and the PSU can handle all that, along with as many hard drives as you can fit into that case. I didn't put a black edition CPU in there because you shouldn't be overclocking a server, so there's no need, and there wasn't really a budget for that. The hard drive is bigger than what you really need, but it leaves room for upgradeability, and carries a 5-year warranty. It'll be blazing fast too, with 64MB of cache and plenty of space.

Anyhow, here she is:

EDIT: People charge really high for any business IT, you may want to look into setting this up yourself if you've got the time, and Google.

$1,000,000,000,000.

Will you be providing long-term support? Is it a one-time fee?
Once again...
