MOD feel free to close this thread. i couldn't figure out how to close it... biggrin.gif

OK. i have zalman 9700NT which has been great until now. it still works but when i got 780i board and OC q6600 to 3.2, idle temp went up to 45~47C and almost 60~62C on load during prime95 so i definitely feel the need of getting new cooling solution for my cpu.

it's 3:30 am and i think i spent good 6~7 hours worth of reading reviews, searching, reading again and again.

i got few coolers in mind after all that reviews/reading/searching but just wanted to make my own post and see what kind of responds i get from gurus on OCN. again, i'm not just posting it blindly. i did my homework and read probably just about every cpu cooling related posts on air cooling section of this forum so don't flame...

here's my requirement.
-i'm and will be overclocking q6600 (current 3.2~3.4ghz) and q9550/9650 (future plan ~4ghzish) on air.
-was considering corsair H50/H70 one point but i get mixed reviews on them and quite of few people experienced that it's worse than air so no closed loop water cooling solution for now.
-my budget is upto right around $100 for the cooler and fans combined.
-noise don't matter. already got 10 fans on my case let alone cpu/gpu/memory coolers inside of case...
-so obviously i'm more performance driven. price or noise is least of my concern as long as it's within the budget which i think just about 90+% of cpu coolers are...

so out of those choices above, which would be the smartest choice?

yea i did initially thought of corsair H70 as i have corsair psu and memories so kinda want to match it up.
but, i get more than one occasion that people are complaining about Corsair H50/H70 performing worse than their air cooled system and i'd much rather go with proven air cooling setup rather than going with H70 and may regret like those few unfortunate. well we'll see...

i saw this review and made my mind up for Noctua NH-D14, although they are pretty much same price range and everything, i see way more people are using NH-D14, hence more feedback biggrin.gif

i sorta agree on your first comment. i mainly mentioned OCZ and Xigmatek because it was just too cheap to pass by and so many people are using those on just about every tech forums out there as well as newegg. so just wanted to see what kind of feedback i get from those users. looks like none so far... reviews on those two were really good for the price too... but i do agree, since i'm going to OC, i'd probably stick with top performer...

sorta bummed out to find out that Noctua NH-D14 won't fit on neither xfx 780i motherboard nor corsair dominator with fans... frown.gif

well the Corsair H50 itself performs the same as top tier air coolers, the H70 i dont know, but i expect it to perform a bit higher.

edit: also, note that the h70 produces minimal noise.

i would love a h70... cant afford tho frown.gif
