Sli on a i5 - Page 2

People worry way too much about bottlenecking. There is always a bottleneck of some kind. It is never a big deal unless your system is ridiculously misproportioned (think Pentium E2180 with dual GTX 580s).

That said, I frankly don't understand why one would want a 2nd GTX 580 at this point in time, unless they were gaming at 2560x1600 or higher, or folding. Is anything, anything at all unplayable with a single GTX 580 that justifies $500 for an extra 580? I'm not flaming anybody here, just kinda throwing it out there And yes I know this is OCN, not budgetcomputers.com, but still

I feel like I've been cloned

Although I wouldn't say it's entirely based on the application ... the hardware does come into play ... but I agree that the most important factors with any reasonably balanced setup (which i5 + 580's in SLI qualifies as) are the level of cpu-dependency of the app + the IQ settings.

this. a second gtx 580 on a i5 setup is kind of a waste. no offense op. but if it were me, i would have taken the money from that second 580 and bought a 1366 platform.

OP: if your still considering buying a second 580 for sli, here is my advice. dont. the 1 you have now is complete overkill. unless your gaming at resolutions higher than 1920x1200, or doing some serious folding, or benchmarks you will not notice any difference at all.

the sweet spot for a game is 60fps. this is because most monitors only support a max of 60fps. the point is you want to keep your frame rate at 60fps or higher during gaming. What you plan on doing is increasing your frame rate from 90 to 140. Trust me when i say you will not notice a difference when gaming. anything after 60fps isnt being used anyway considering your monitor is only 60fps(assuming).

Hooray! People are learning!

I love good advice and this is some good advice here. It's extremely application/scenario based.

If you were playing WoW for instance, you would need a CPU that's overclocked to 4Ghz+ with at least 3 logical CPU's to run well because it's so heavily CPU coded. It all depends on what you are doing with the hardware as to where the bottleneck will be.

yeah, not necessarily meaning right now per say for the 2nd GPU. But just thinking in a 1/2 a year or so.

I have not played anything yet with the i5/580 setup, so i can not really say that anything is unplayable. Even with the E7500/580 set up, things were playable, but i was saddened that when i tried to pay GTA it was low 20- high teens FPS.

Next in line i think will be some SSD's

Its a waste of pixels saying "another 580 is a waste" and so on.

Some people (me included) feel that having to "sacrifice" going from 8aa to 4aa so the game will be just a bit more playable from 50fps to 60fps, is missing something of the game.

Having the option to play metro at 8aa, DX11, physx and super high details, and see some monster drooling in full details as it comes rushing at you, makes it SO worth it.
The game looks much more real and more fun.

For a person who plays solitaire and browse the web and that's it, SLI is not what he needs. But for gamers, the more the merrier.
