Grouping Shortcuts Differently in Windows XP

Thread Starter
I'm looking to make Windows recognize shortcuts as the files and/or folders that they link to. For example: if I have a shortcut to an executable placed in a folder with other executables, when I tell Explorer to group by filetype, I want said shortcut to be grouped as an application with the other executables. Or, if I have a shortcut to a folder, I want it to be grouped with the other folders. Is this possible, by means of third-party software or otherwise?

A symbolic link might work. I don't remember how to create them in windows off the top of my head but google should help you.
