Whats the 980 nVidia chipset... Asus M4N98TD

Choosing between M4N98TD and ASrock 890gx extreme3 (for a friend) and im undecided/confused about the 980 chipset, can anyone clarify?

NVIDIA rebranded the 790a chipset. That's all it is a rebrand. It's for AM3 motherboards. If your friend plans to SLI, then go with the NVIDIA chipset, otherwise don't bother, it fails horribly compared to AMDs chipsets (well, actually it just performs worse and produces more heat/consumes more power).

Nvidia 980a is a rebranded 780a chipset that was released a couple of years ago, and for now the only AMD chipset with SLI support:

The Asrock board is based on AMD's 890GX and it looks like a good motherboard. It has all the connectivity one could wish for and seems to have chipset cooling well taken care of.

The 980a chipset is basically the same as the 780a, but with support for the AM3 cpu and DDR3 memory if I remember correctly.

ASRock 890GX Extreme3 - xfire support, no SLI support
ASUS M4N98TD EVO AM3 - no xfire support, SLI support.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this plz.

You're right , anyways i read a few months ago that some guys were doing soft mods to enable SLI support in AMD/ATI chipsets , but im not sure if this applies to new chipsets

That's been done a lot, on just about any chipset. As long as its got 2x PCIe slots, you can SLI on it .
