my crazy idea

Thread Starter
my main computer is a macbook 2008 2.0 ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb ram, nvidia 9400m. it has served me well. i played mw2 with high settings just fine.. but i wanna move on up, and play bfbc2 and other games. getting a desktop doesnt fit my lifestyle and i cant afford a $1500 pc laptop that will have good but not great graphics. so here is my idea:

by a low-midrange laptop with decent cpu and good memory.. BUT MAKE SURE IT HAS EXPRESS CARD 2.0 SLOT.
then get this sucker http://www.villageinstruments.com/tiki-index.php?page=ViDock it is an external pci express x16 enclosure.
then il get a good affordable graphics card.
ive seen tests where it took a really crappy dell latitude with a low core 2 duo and intel gma 945 graphics, with a good external card it could run crysis and halflife lost coast benchmark really well...

is this even a feasible idea (cost effective) or am i being crazy

Only tough part will be finding a laptop with that Express card slot. The only laptops I have seen with those are MBP's. Other then that; find a card that only draps 75 watts, and you will be good to go.

That's not a cost effective method at all. $230 shipped for the cheapest vdock on top of a powerful GPU to play the game which will run you at least $130, your at $360, in addition to a laptop with a powerful enough CPU--looking at at least $600, your at $960 + any misc. expenses. If you have the money, do it. Otherwise, why not just have a desktop and laptop?

Oh, thanks for letting me know my Macbook can play MW2 on high! hah. I have the same one.

well i dont REALLY have the money, but i have a space macbook of the same settings as mine except 2 gb ram, that i could sell its just lying around...

i am living with my parents at the moment in a 1 bedroom apt and theres literally no room for a desktop and monitor and keyboard all sprawled out. i am a pianist currently in college and im commuting to school everyday and spending most of the day there practicing and teaching and working, so i need a laptop. im just looking for a way to have a laptop and "highish" end gaming. If i want a pc laptop with a 1gb video card i have to spend $1,500-$1,700 and i just cant afford that.

Not a good idea in my mind. You can get a good gaming laptop for under $1200.
Even best buy has an asus g73 for 1200

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+/+17.3%22+Display+/+6GB+Memory+/+640GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/1257894.p?id=1218243761956&skuId=1257894&st=asus%20g73&cp=1&lp=1

So if you cant go with a desktop go with a solid gaming laptop. You may be able to find a refurb for even cheaper.

Yeah, what the guy above me said. Wait for a deal on a gaming laptop--thats your best bet given your situation.

A DIY ViDock is far more cost effective, with better software and can do x1 and x2 connectivity if your notebook has accessible odd+even port pairs.
