Unlocking 6950, still possible?

Thread Starter
Im thinking of getting a 6950 and unlocking it, but at the moment i dont have enough money, i could convince my dad to lend me the money but i would rather not UNLESS AMD has plans to change something to stop people unlocking it, like i said, is it still possible and does anyone know approximately when it wont be?

Also**: when you try to crossfire them, can you crossfire a flashed 6950 with an unflashed? or can you crossfire a flashed 6950 with a 6970? Or can you only crossfire two flashed 6950s.

Well Im thinking its like the 4 series of ati card and your could xfire a 4850 and 4870 but the 4870 would run like a 2nd 4850. I may be wrong but i would guess its the same with the 6 series

I don't have personal experience, but...

You can CFX a 6970 with a 6950, so I assume you can CFX an unlocked 6950(which will show up as a 6970) with a reference 6950.

Reference basically means that the manufactures Gigabyte, MSI, Gainward, etc... make no changes to the card the comes from nVidia or ATI.

This means that not only is the card(core and memory) the same, but also the cooler is the same as the cooler designed by nVidia/ATI.

What the result of a card being reference is is that the only difference between a Gigabyte or MSI card is the warranty.

Edit: Which basically makes the thousand GTX 5XX and ATI 6xxx threads asking what brand to buy completely pointless.

Absolutely, which pretty much makes buying any of the other 6950s on that site pointless because they are all more expensive.
