Idea's on repair or a replacement

Ok my wife has a Dell Vostro 1500, 1.8ghz c2d, 2gb ram, 320gb WD black 7200rpm hdd, 8600M GT. Basically the image on the screen is getting lines though it and sometimes like drooping. I have checked and the screen seems to be fine, which leads me to believe that its the gpu, which seems to be running slightly warmer than it did when I got it(it ran about 47C when it was new, now it runs 51C). I can't do a video update, because whenever I download one, the nvidia installer comes up and says there is no nvidia graphics detected. But it has ran just fine on the same driver for 3 years without issue.

Any ideas?

Also any reliable replacement ideas, that are dirt cheap? Money is super tight but she can't work without the laptop, so something to get us through until our tax return would be good.

Is the Monitor-> Motherboard connection tight and fully seated? Also, it looks like Dell has an "Urgent" update for the video card from 7/19/2009, is that the one you tried, or did you try the one from Nvidia's site?

Definitely sounds like the gfx card may be bad. Also did you download the video drivers from dell or nvidia?

For a new laptop you could look at this-

or if you have a Staples nearby alot of their laptops are on clearance right now

Yes the connectors are all fully snug, I even unplugged and repluged them all in to make sure.

Its running a driver from 2007 I believe, and I have tried both the nvidia site ones and the ones on dell with no success.

The lines across the screen / other artifacts at stock speeds usually indicates either bad or poorly "connected" graphics RAM. I know I've had several desktop gfx card where that was the case. Also the mobile 8600GT was notorious for having issues, such as those in the macbook pro.

Ah, thats right, almost forgot about that.

lemans81, you should give Dell a call and describe the issue; you remember the Nvidia bumps issue? This notoriously effected similar models of laptops, and the 8600GT. Dell might cave and accept an RMA if you work it right that this is a known defect and HP and others have fully accepted RMA's for units out of warranty.

Does the same thing happen with an external monitor?

edit: read bout the driver issue..that could very well be indicative of a failing GPU. The 8600GT was affected by the Nvidia recall. I know for macbooks at least, one of the symptoms of this was it being detected as integrated intel video.
