GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6950 2GB for $299.

or the EVGA GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) SuperClocked for $264

or the MSI N470GTX Twin Frozr II GeForce GTX 470, it's the same price as the one above, but this comes with an aftermarket cooler.
I'm not sure if it's sensible money spent on a superclocked card when I'm going to turn up the wick on whatever I buy anyway.. however I do like those Frozr II coolers. Thanks! And in the future I'll definitely be looking to add a second card in SLI/Crossfire as prices come down and demands go up.

Not liking the reviews I'm seeing on the HD5770 UD 1GB so I'll steer clear of that one. Plus it looks gay.

On the other hand I love what I am reading about the 6870s. A cool, quiet, efficient card - and as a bonus it'd work perfectly in the red/black case, with plenty of provision to add another later on if need be. Not sure if I'd go the black edition or save $20 and just OC the regular XFX HD 6870 myself..

This line has me in a crisis.. 6870 for a better set up efficient card, or 470 for OC potential..

We should also mention that the GeForce GTX 470 can use nearly twice the power of the Radeon HD 6850 under load, which might be a concern for folks without a lot of power supply overhead. On the other hand, the GeForce GTX 470 probably has more available overclocking overhead than the Radeon HD 6870, since AMD's entry is clocked quite high to begin with.

XFX Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition Video Card Review
AMD 6800 Series Review .. mixed views on sound levels

also food for thought - a big plus for the 470...

Costum cooled gtx 470 like TwinFrozr has almost 40% OC headroom. 20 to 30% performance gratis, but it needs more CPU power than q9650 at least in some games. It is little funy when compare GPU clocks 607 vs 940mhz

go for the GTX 470. Some say that it has heat issues, but these cards are designed to run on hot temps. If you're worrying about its power consumption, the HX650 is enough, or.... you could buy a 850w PSU and never buy a new psu ever. Well... unless you upgraded big

hmm, GTX470 may not OC as well as I first thought it would - gains a bit, but not the 40% some dude was claiming up there, although this example doesn't exactly have an epic heatsink on it.

That's why there are SuperClocked version of these cards. So the user wouldn't have such a hard time OCing these babies.

worth the extra cash? or just bottlenecked by the rest of the build? will read a few reviews on them tonight but a few more opinions wouldn't go astray.

2gb? How big is your resolution? Are you playing games at 2k x 1.9k ?

Which one of these will be my better option on the listed system? Built with 1920x1080 gaming in mind, will most certainly be OC'd and will probably have another card added in future.
That motherboard supports Crossfire only. So, in order to keep the option opened for this 2nd card, I suggest AMD cards only (no Nvidia cards).

And, I see that you are using Win 7 32-bit with only 2GB Ram for your sig rig. Good that you are going to use 4GB ram for the new build. And, I strongly suggest you move to a 64-bit OS, in order to make full use of the 4GB ram. This is important because if you choose a card like HD6950, its 2GB Vram will map into your system ram in a 32-bit OS and is not good.

I suggest HD6870 1GB or HD6950 2GB.

The motherboard *officially* supports only Crossfire, but it seems it's easy enough to turn on SLI support, I read enough about this to know it's very doable with no more than a software update.

My sig rig is a poo computer that I'm using because I got it nice and cheap, and to learn a little about system building and overclocking I think of it as practice. It'll probably be the one I keep my music and associated crap on, and work when the need arises.

The new build I will probably move up to 64bit win7. TBH I'm considering going the motherboard's max supported (I think?) 8gb RAM right from the get-go but I don't know enough about RAM varieties and specs to pick the right set. Is 8gb even needed or helpful in any way for what I'm building?
