925 or e5700 or e7300??

Thread Starter
Hey guys! I'm relatively new to overclocking and I've been wanting to overclock something right now, to test how far I can go and I got these cpus to choose from.

Pentium D 925
Intel dual core e5700
c2d e7300

I have been considering 925 because its half the price of the other two, but if its really that bad I would opt to spend a little more.
Got a Asus p5k pro mobo
Please do rate it by overclock-ability

The E7300 will destroy the Pentium D. Besides, the 925 runs really hot and is outperformed by an Athlon X2 5000+ by a hefty margin. The Get the Core 2 Duo since they're faster at stock speeds and you'd get much higher results with it.

It really depends on the ram you have. And motherboard.

The e5700 would help on that p5k since it has a high multiplier. But the e7300 has slightly more cache and could have a lower VID

Maybe I'll get a DDR2 800?
Does Ram timings play a big part on overclocking?
and which of the three can give me the highest frequency?
Considering I'm willing to spend more budget on cooling
Its like me and my friend is competing who can have a higher frequency.

Thanks!
Sorry Im a newbie

The E7300 would be the best, of course. The Pentium D 925 would just be hot and annoying. The E5700 is very close to the E7300.

If it were me, I would get the E5700 and devote those last few dollars towards cooling.

Oh, and one suggestion: buy used. My E5200 only cost me $40 shipped.

ram at 800mhz wont let you get much high speeds that you already have unless you just use the multiplier. I had a intel e6550 that would clock up to 3.3ghz but i could not push the ram any faster cause it was rated at 800mhz i had it to 960mhz any faster than that my mother board would not post. if you going for as ffast as you can get this chip to. go with ddr2 1333 or even high. even more so if your trying to hit the 4.0ghz

Get anything from E5200 to E5800.
Since they have 200mhz fsb they have a high multiplier. That way you don't have to raise the fsb as high to get really high CPU clocks.

My 800 Mhz DDR2 will do 1091 Mhz stable if I loosen the timings to 5-5-5-18......

However, E5x00 tend to have a FSB wall around 330-350MHz.
