I would go with the x3 720 instead of the the x3 435 or the x2 555, granted you have a better chance of unlocking with the 555 but if it doesnt it would likely be about the same as your C2D. But a 720 even if it doesnt unlock will be significantly faster than you C2D.

I would forgo the 700 series for a 555 due to the fact that the 700 series are all C2 revision and the 555 is C3 revision = better overclocking.

Unfortunately my hardware vendor doesn't carry X3 7 cpu's. My choice for the 555 is because of it beeing c3 stepping.

Well in short when I got my 720 BE I was hoping for an overclock of 4Ghz but all I could get is 3.879 GHz.

But I will admit I was surprised when I unlocked it to a quad, that the thing could do 3.716 GHz.
I had my fun with it now it's degrading at first I needed 1.48 v for 3.716 unlocked then when I did it again I needed 1.52v to make it stable.
So now it sits in it's clam shell waiting for a new home or for me to get a LN2/DICE pot...lol.

Another point to remember you are going to be limited as to future proofing, the new Bulldozer will require an AM3+ Mobo.

So if I where buying with the end goal being the Bulldozer then i would get one of the cheaper, but still good overclocker of a board so it doesn't seem of such a stretch of a purchase to buy a new board when AM3+ comes out.

But even then the AM3+ boards are going to be able to house the older AM3 CPU's, so maybe hang about on a cheap substitute board until then, then slap in your AM3 Cpu into the AM3+ board and then you will still be able to upgrade to Bulldozer when you feel the need to.

But I think that even the thubans (x6's) are going to be fine for a while yet.

The 555 will last me at least half a year. If i don't sell it before that . I believe my E8200 lasted me the longest any setup ever did. I usually upgrade every year.

The evo board is capable of supporting a X6 so i will grab one in the near future and call it ok for another year or so.

Yes, my x3 720 doesn't clock all that well compared to the 9xx's and c3 chips. Highest I was ever able to boot at was ~3.8 and it wasn't stable. The highest stable clock I was able to get was ~3650-3700. My c3 965 does 4.2ghz all day long. If you want bang for buck go with an Athlon II x3 but don't expect the best overclock out of it. If you want high oc's, then get a PII 550-555.

Corsair A50 or A70
Both at a much lower price and better than Hyper 212+.

The 555BE rocks, seriously. Even if it doesn't unlock, it's a black edition with unlocked multipliers, it should clock well. 4GHz should not be a problem with the Hyper 212+, or close to it. Build looks good with the 555BE.
