4870 CrossFireX!

Yea! Woohoo! Time to join the party!

Wait...

The party ended in 2009? Aw, crap.

Well, screw it. I've finally gotten around to going dual GPU (disregarding a failed mixed CFX attempt in late 2009--don't mix the 4870 and 4850), I got the same Sapphire card I have off ebay for $75, and got it in the mail and installed it today, no hiccups (so far).

So wait, you ask, why are you doing CrossFire of two cards that are over two years old at this point? Well, two reasons. First, the 4870 is still a beast, on par with the 5770, and at a 1440x900 resolution I really didn't need any more. However, I've upgraded to a 1920x1080 HDTV for a monitor, and I can see the slowdowns in many games that I used to consistently get >60fps.

But why not get, say, a 6870 or a GTX460? Easy. I had two options:

1.) Get new generation card for $200-$250, for a 30-40% performance increase, DX11, and lower heat, power, and noise.

2.) Get second 4870 for $75, for a 40-60% performance increase, DX10, and more heat, power, and noise.

Well I can't use DX11 since I'm still on Vista and don't plan on upgrading to 7 for a while yet, power's no issue, my case has good cooling, and my headphones block out most noise. So it was more performance for a fraction of the cost.

Anyway, I'm going to try these babies out, then post some pictures and benchmarks.

Post away, grats on the new part. You still have a rig that's better then 90% of consumers, regardless of what many overzealous part buyers on here would say I loved my 4830 x 2 set up, regretted moving to a 4890 from them for a while.

Installed.

I haven't done any benchmarks yet, but I have found that most games are much, much smoother. I still can't *quite* 100% max Crysis But with AA at x4 and everything else maxed it's very playable, though I suspect I'd have to tone things down a bit on the final level. I may have a CPU bottleneck there.

Our model of the Sapphire 4870 rocks, it runs so cool. Congrats. Where'd you get it?

I got the second one off ebay. Guy shipped it with everything, great condition. All the accessories were there, fantastic deal for $75. I actually feel a little bad, mine was appraised at $90 just for the card, no accessories, and that was only a couple months ago. Oh well.
