X2 555 Budget Build

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I was looking to build a budget system with the Phenom II X2 555 CPU. I've spent ages researching but I am still not sure what motherboard or PSU to get. I won't be needing a graphics card. I was looking to spend about £300 on the whole system (or less). So far the Asus M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard looks good, but if you guys could give me any other suggestions I would be very grateful. My budget for the mobo is about £70. Also, could you recommend any good PSUs? Thanks.

I forgot to add, I'm hoping to unlock the CPU.

what memory are you using/hope to use? does the board need on board graphics or you have a card?
what components do need to do your build?
dont be suckered in by £15 500w PSU's,spend £40/£50 and you will have more headroom for some expansion later on with much greater reliability.

I'll be buying a 4GB Kit of DDR3 RAM @ 1333 or 1600 MHz. I'll just be using the onboard graphics. Only other stuff I need is a HDD and a CPU cooler.

555 unlocked on stock cooler will be fine, overclocking will need a bigger one

where will you be ordering from?

Check the mobo in my sig rig. I use it with my 555 also. Got my 555 unlocked to a stable quad.Good luck with yours. If you want more info on my mobo just let me know.

I'll be ordering from wherevers cheapest in the UK so probably ebuyer. Any more motherboard and PSU recommendations guys? I'm starting to think I'll be better buying an X4 955 instead risking not being able to unlock the 555. Thanks.

Here is a quick build coming in at £281. The mobo is Phenom x2 compatible and has a core unlocker on it. (http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=pr...9&maincat_no=1). Fairly cheap too. PSU is made by Corsair, a reputable manufacturer for making solid PSU's. Likewise with RAM. I have a Corsair PSU and its whisper quiet. Not sure about the case but it has good reviews, mid sized. The Phenom x2 (x4) is lovely, but remember it is a lucky dip on whether you can unlock those hidden cores or not.

edit: Just seen this AntecTruePower PSU on ebuyer, I've heard good things about these. 650w too (Plenty Futureproof). £16 off. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159920

Thats probably a better idea if your set on a quad core. Better to not be disappointed if the 555 doesn't unlock.
