The beauty of having choices; you're never stuck with one.

RMA the card, tell them exactly what is wrong with the replacement they sent you, further tell them that giving up voltage control and going from a reference card to their custom pcb is something you consider a definite downgrade and that you expect them to replace your card with a reference 4890 or a better card. Do NOT take a 5770, b/c they will try and give you one at the point.

Step 2, don't ever buy xfx. I owned one xfx card, an 8800GS, they cheaped out on the cooling so there was NO manual fan control. Never used that garbage company again.

As a side note I loved my 4890. It was never a great over clocker like so many were, but even at stock (after I screwed up the memory and it wouldn't overclock much at all) it played most of my games at 2560x1600 at pretty high settings. They really were great cards. Of course mine was reference.

directly from my warranty book from my 6950:

XFX has carefully selected the optimal thermal or fansink component for your graphics model. We do not encourage the removal of components due to damage that may result in the process. CFC understands that some enthusiasts may choose to replace the original component with their own cooling solution. To support the gaming community, we recommend that you contact XFX prior to any modifications so that we can update your profile and product registration to avoid potential issues with warranty support. In addition, XFX support will be able to walk through the installation with you or provide feedback and pointers on available options for your specific product. You may even consider shipping your components to XFX and allow the technicians at XFX to perform the modification for you (shipping charges to XFX apply).
It's a reference model. They cant have any modification to it except on the sticker.

Oh XFX, you liar.

i contacted them and here is what they said:
Quote:
Hi, What is the serial number of the card that was sent to you? What kind of artifacts are you getting? Are you able to get screenshots and send them to me at erik.adams@xfxforce.com so we can have them on record? Let me know. - Erik
the artifacts are really hard to capture so idk how im gonna pull that off.
i guess i'll run OCCT at stock speeds and show them a screen of it artifacting like the 4th of july.

i dissagre with the bold.
but there is no way in hell i'll accept a 5770. i dont care if its 'more powerful with drivers'. XFX wont skrew me over.
btw i loved 4890s too! my XFX REFERENCE 4890 had the works and it was orgasmic at 955Mhz/1100Mhz speed
then it got zapped. oh well.

Yep, just use a digital camera. Light the room well, and turn the flash off to eliminate glare.

They'll probably try to toss a 5830 his way then. AFAIK, the XFX 5830's were cheaped out non-ref from release.

Note: ATI never made a reference 5830 board, so there are no reference cards, regardelss of vendor. Some vendors' early 5830s are built on 5870 boards, which is why some of them have higher power usage than a reference 5850 card.
