It's your own damn fault for buying a phone with a weird connector. No government has any reason or right to regulate this kinda stuff. It's trivial.
Im a little confused about your reply. Ofcourse a business does not need to give a damn about what they put on their products, but this is a good way to stop people from having tons of different chargers which eventually go to landfills.

I remember several years ago i had about 5 different chargers because each company (like sony eric/nokia/sagem) had a different charger. And when i send the phones in to recycle, they do not take chargers with them.

Now, i have only ONE charger that is a usb wall socket and 1 type of cable. Not only can i charge or connect any of my devices, these cables dont need to be thrown away when new stuff comes out

A weird connector such as one that is used by one and only one manufacturer (read: Apple)?

Yes, in the ideal world, manufacturers would come together harmoniously and come up with the best method for a standard. But in the real world, manufacturers are filled with fail. Manufacturers can't even stick to their own standard, and change connectors faster than a hooker can take her clothes off.

None of this is driven by Europe either, it is the Chinese Government that imposed a USB-Only standard, and that has rippled. Of course, using USB has one good thing, every manufacturer is forced to abide by the requirements of a 5V, 500mA charger, with the same (or can be easily converted with adapters), rather than the crazy array of stuff manufacturers used simply because they got some good deal on a boatload of wall warts.

I like this. One charging format is so much simpler.

i own 2 cell phone stores and i hate chargers. we have literally 8 trash bins full of different chargers. to those who are not fond of the idea of having one type is just stupid. plus the prices of chargers that we sell is just outrageous but that's the market. now if everyone just buy microusb cables, life would be so much better. one cord fits all.

We have to save the brainwashed Apple junkies and the grandmas who bought the cheap phones. Mainly we are trying to save idiots and old people with this. (As usual.)

Good job the EC isn't the government, then. Plus, the government is there to govern. That's it's job. If you don't like being governed then it is highly suggested you take yourself a small island, claim ownership, and start your own state.

Or you could go live in China and then moan about western government regulation.

I like this,

Makes it easier for 3rd party peripheral manufacturers as well. Now they can cater to multiple devices easier.

Uhm, China has WAYYY more government-imposed regulation than most western countries. That's half the reason why I oppose stuff like this as well.

Look at australia and their push to regulate the video games that are sold there (and the content in games as a whole), look at their regulation of content on the internet.

I am all for a government doing its governing, but just because something CAN be regulated doesn't mean it SHOULD be regulated.
