Green drives alright?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at replacing my current 500GB internal hard drive with a 1.5TB WD green drive. I'm wondering if green drives are alright for what I'm going to be using it for.

I have a 64GB SSD which I will be using for the OS and core applications (which should hopefully be up to full speed when I replace the motherboard tonight or tomorrow), so I only need the green drive for storage, programs, and games I don't want/need on the SSD.

Please note that price is a factor and I really can't pick anything more expensive then that.

I got a 2TB WD drive to use for storage since I got a TV tuner. I went with the AV-GP version which is spec'd for 24/7 + high heat, since I leave the rig on folding all the time, but that's different in size and price. I've had no problems with it so far. Otherwise my drives are 3x320WD Blue and they've been great. I'd say you should be fine.

Edit: If the green drives don't perform well enough for you, you can always look into multiple partitions/short stroking. The trick is to find a drive that runs at 7200RPM and then idles, ie Intellipower or whatever it's called now, as opposed to one that always runs at 5900RPM. That way you can get the higher speeds when you need it and the power savings when it's idling.

The WD 1,5tb green drive will be just fine for your storage needs. Sell the 500gb drive and use those proceeds to help purchase a wd 640 black or a sammy f3 for your gaming.

WD's Greens are perfectly fine for storage. If you don't mind just 1TB I would recommend the WD Caviar Blue, though. Same price as the 1.5TB Green but faster. Or just save up some money and buy a nice Black.
