GTX 580 SLI vs Radeon 6970 Crossfire?

Thread Starter
I know this question has probably been asked a bazillion times before but i havent been on in 3 weeks so im behind, lol. I wanna upgrade to either 2 GTX 580s in SLI or 2 6970s in crossfire.....which scales better, has the better drivers and will pull the best and most overall FPS in games? I know the GTX 580 is the fastest card on the planet but the 6970 crossfire vs. the GTX 580 SLI is darn close, just a few FPS in practically all games! Ill be saving a load of money if i go with the 6970s but then again that little e-peen demon keeps whispering in the back of my mind, "GET THE GTX 580!!!)" lol. How much has CFX scaling improved and how does it compare to SLI? And is the few FPS boost with the 580 worth the extra cash? What should i get?

No to be that guy or anything, but either is likely to be extreme overkill for your monitor isn't it? I'd save my money and go single 580 or SLI 570's if you really wanted to go SLI. I have a hard time recommending you drop 1k+ on 2 580's

I think buying a U2711 monitor would enhance your gaming experiences more than another GPU at the moment. The monitor visually displays all your graphics...it's all your eye candy. I think a 2560x1440 will dramatically improve your gaming experience. You won't even need AA with that resolution on a 27" panel either!

i've had a couple 580's since release and absolutely love them. they play every game i own with ease. please notice, i game on three monitors (when the game allows me). if you play on one, it is overkill big-time. honestly, one 580 will cover you. heck, even a single 570 is great for a single monitor setup. nvidia drivers are ftw as well.

i don't know much about 6970's, but i have heard that some 6950's unlock to 6970's. honestly, that is a killer deal. for me, ati's drivers and game support is a deal-breaker for me.

i know! but the e-peen troll is gnawing on my brain! Screaming in my ear to get 2 GTX 580s! 99 out of 100 times, when people get 2 video cards, especially 2 high end enthusiast cards like the 580, its never out of necessity, just out of the fact of saying, "HA! I have 2!"......even on youtube, ive seen benches ran on metro 2033 with the 580s in SLI on a 24 inch monitor and the dude was pulling 55-65 fps the whole time, with minor dips in fram rate here and there, but only for a mere second or two.....is 2 GTX 580s overkill? you bet your badonkadonk it is!!!!! Do i truly need it? Heck no! But in today's world, where status is literally EVERYTHING, having 2 high end cards is a must, especially if youre a guy, we like to go overboard and flaunt and puff our chest out and say, "HA HA HA!!! I GOT THIS AND YOU DONT!", its human nature.....just like when you see someone driving down the street in a brand spanking new ferrari or lamborghini, do they need that car? Do they race professionally?.....NO!!!! But yet again, the E-PEEN troll wins again! He's a brain ninja!lol.

Just wait for the upcoming 6990, and go Tri-Fire with a 6970. It will rape 580 SLI for around the same price!

That's my plan. I already got the 6970 + Ek waterblock today. 329$ cdn (Paypal cashback) for the 6970 + 99$ for the waterblock. LESS then a single plain 580 in Canada.

Not enough video memory on the 580. Forget them.

For multiple screens set-up (I'm planning to go 3X 30'' LCDs) and high-res, and since 6970 Crossfire is ALREADY ahead of 580 SLI in alot of games at those high resolutions (and with early drivers), 6990 + 6970 will totally laugh in the face of 580 SLI... for around the same price.

No, don't go CFX, it is the most buggerd tech I have ever used. You want SLI, you want SLI 580s, buy SLI 580s.

You can always use SLI AA in games that aren't very demanding and in DX11 all these people who tell you it is overkill will be gaming with 40FPS, while you sit at 70-80.
