For me buying 580 SLI is pocket change. Really. But the performance with multiple screens set-ups and high end gaming res, 6970 Crossfire is ahead in alot of benchmarks. Look at my sig. If 580 SLI was better, there would alread y be 2 or 3 watercooled in my Mountain Mods Ascension.

But in Canada, the lowest 580 is over 500$. 500$ for LESS video memory (really bad for high-end high-es multiple screens gaming), and lower performance from 580 SLI versus 6970 Crossfire. Why pay more for less memory and on par performance?

I'm talking about high-end gaming here. Don't show me benchmarks at 1080p. Look at 2560X1600 and higher multiple screens resolutions. 1980X1200 on a 24'' is NOT high-end gaming.

I'm in Tri-Fire 5970+5870 rock-stable at 1000/1200 since over 1 year. No freeze/crash/BSOD/stutter, etc. NO PROBLEMS. Drivers are fine. Every game I play, every software I use.

I also have 2 other gaming system at home with 2X4870 Crossfire, and my 3 systems a rock-stable. Not a single problems. Drivers are fine.

Show me a 580 with 2gb of memory and I would jump on it. Right now, the 580 are not interesting for high-end gamings. Not for the price the ask for.

This has already been discussed so many times.
The 2GB vs 1.5GB is irrelevent as the memory bandwide is higher on the 580 and it has a stronger GPU, which makes it up for 0.5GB of less memory.
And still in almost every review, the 580s out-perform the 6970, regardless of memory. Most of the times its CPU bottle-necking the 580s, which cause lower results (Check the guru3d reviews. They state as much every time, mostly in the tri-sli reviews).

I had a different experience with 5970+5870 which I also had for 6 months.
Eyefinity and CFX issues, stuttering, low performance and no CFX+Eyefinity support it many games through out the drivers.
And drivers... well... After the third time of new drivers, drivers patch after 3 days, patch to the patch after 3 more days, still issues, I gave up.

Please show me a review which says that the 6970 crossfire performs absolutely better than the 580 sli, and I can show you a review which says otherwise.

I agree that the 6970 cost less (or 6950 unlocked, but its not 100% safe, and it can't be compared because of that).
But they do not out perform.
Money per performance they have a better ratio, but thats irrelevent when you talk about performance as the single parameter for comparison.

To the OP:
If its just money, get the 6970s. They perform well and the new drivers scale the CFX well (until next drivers which will break it and you have to wait for a patch or go back. Happens way too much on AMD side for my taste).
If its out-right performance, 580s.
2GB vs 1.5GB, in every review you can see that it doesn't matter. Even at high resolutions.
If you play at 1080p, none of it matters. Even a couple of 6950 and 570s will max things out at that resolution in most cases.

Here is a latest review of 2-way (and 3-way) Crossfire/SLi Scaling. It is done on the Sandy Bridge platform but is still good for reference. It does mention scalability, driver issues...etc

Holy **** your posts are full of ******* rubish.

Your beating on the GTX580 cause they have 1.5GB of memory? Are you ******* that stupid?

TRY and find me a some proof of a game needing more then 1.5GB at real world resolutions.

And actually, 2x 6970's don't get even close to 2x GTX580's, maybe you should go actually read some benchmarks....

6970 isn't a good buy when a GTX570 matches it and its CHEAPER. YEAH man 2x 6970's are gonna beat 2x GTX580's when a single 6970 can't even get close to a GTX580 and even a GTX570 in some games.

Stop talking out of your ass. You keep telling yourself that a "6970" is better.

EDIT: What Defoler said, spot on.

No, don't go CFX, it is the most buggerd tech I have ever used. You want SLI, you want SLI 580s, buy SLI 580s.

You can always use SLI AA in games that aren't very demanding and in DX11 all these people who tell you it is overkill will be gaming with 40FPS, while you sit at 70-80.

i agree +1 lol.

and no, money isnt a true issue for me as well, thank god for tax returns!lol. Im the type of person who, if i like something and want to go all out, i find the money spent on it well worth it in the end. Beyond the performance between the 6970 and 580, the scaling, IMO, is better with nvidia, you get a higher boost from 1 to 2 cards with nvidia then 1 to 2 cards with AMD, on one bench, in the same game, 1 GTX 580 got 85 fps, then when a 2nd was added, it jumped from 85 fps to like 165-195 fps!!! thats an amazing increase....but the scaling with AMD cards, IMHO, doesnt come anywhere near Nvidia, i love ATI, yes, its still ATI in my book,lol....but CFX doesnt truly increase all that much from the transition from 1 to 2 cards, One bench on youtube, sorry, forgot the video, this guy ran 2 GTX 580s against 2 6970s, and the 2nd 580 added over 120 FPS compared to the 1 580, and the 2nd 6970 only added like 80-90 FPS to the 1 6970......
