first OCCT attempt BEFORE overclocking, overheated Q6600

Thread Starter
Just purchased a Corsair H70 for my G0 Q6600 and hope to overclock to a conservative 3.4ghz. This will be my first overclocking attempt. I ran OCCT and core temp to get a baseline before I installed the H70 or changed any settings and it shut off after 1 minute and said it was overheating. Here's a screen shot of right after it shut off, the first 2 cores actually hit 72 and 70 degrees.

Is this strange for a 2.4ghz Q6600 with the stock heat sink? Not sure what my ambient temps are, my case is a little bit dusty inside (not horrible) which I am about to clean, but I have never had any problem playing games or anything and crashes have been very rare since I built it. Is OCCT that much more stressful than gaming?

in a short answer : yes it is all stressing programs push your cpu to its limit or farther

Ignore OCCTs warnings and turn off all it's monitoring stuff. Pay attention to CoreTemp yourself.

A stock Q6600 will get very hot with the stock heatsink, but as long as you aren't actually hitting the TJmax you should be alright.

And yes, OCCT and other stress tests are much more demanding than games.

Ahh, I thought it was unsafe to turn off the OCCT warnings.

So core temp has the TJmax for the Q6600 at 100 degrees, put I have read intel says it's 90, but you can leave core temp at 100 to be conservative.

So if I leave core temp at 100 and I watch it for the hour that it's on (OCCT warnings turned off), do I turn it off if it gets close to 90, or 100?? But I also read that temps under load for the Q6600 shouldn't get over 71 degrees under load... ?

Sorry for the newbie questions. I did try to read up before I posted this.

Yes Q6600 G0 has a Tjmax of 90C and B3 stepping has 80C Tjmax..

You should keep your Q6600 G0 under 75C at any stress test to avoid eventual degradation of the CPU..

CHEERS..

Fantastic, thank you . And I assume you mean to shut down OCCT if I see the temps at the far left on Core Temp reach, 75, not the temps under "High", correct?

(Sorry, first time overdocking and want to be careful!)

Yes, that is what he meant. Though OCCT should be the only program giving you the "high" number in CoreTemp as that is the highest temperature your cores have been at since you started Coretemp.

So if the actual temperature of the cores gets to 75 degrees, shut OCCT off
