Sandy bridge cooler - Page 2

According to the reviews I have seen, Archon is the top cooler, especially with two TY-140 fans. You have to buy the second fan, but the heatsink comes with the extra set of clips. Silver Arrow is second best. It comes with two TY-140's. Both of these heatsinks are very quiet - quieter than the NH-D14, which is very quiet. The NH-D14 is at most a degree behind the SA, but it has the very best mount of all the heatsinks.

At the next level you have the Megas and the VX. You need to buy fans to get the most out of them (see item 1 in my sig). The VX shares its mount with the SA and Archon (some people have problems with wiggling). The Mega and The Super Mega have an excellent mounting system, right behind the Noctua mount. If you are thinking of getting a Mega, get a Super Mega instead. It has low profile tensioning screws that allow you to use 140mm fans. Get two TY-140's.

Next level: Tt Frio and the Mugen 2. The M2 is hard to mount - you have to put the mb on the cooler, not the cooler on the mb. But once it's on, it's on solid. M2 is your most cost effective solution when it is at $40. At $34, it's irresistible unless you're getting a more powerful cooler.

There are other fine coolers out there: the 212+, the V6, the Amageddon, etc. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Notes on the Hyper 212+:

Sin0822 had problems with thermal thottling at 5.2 Ghz with 1.5v LLC level 2. I plan to run mind around 4.6Ghz so I will just have to see how my Hyper 212+ with yate loon SH fans perform.

Large multiple heat pipe coolers (5 or more) may not be as effective since the sandy bridge chips are small. The eclipse II that Sin went to only had direct contact with 3 of the five heat pipes!

I hope he did not mind me sharing this information.
