Corsair Obsidian 650D Mid-Tower - Page 403

I just built 650D-based system. Relevant specs include a i7-3770k I'd like to get around 5GHz. a single GTX680 Asus Directcu ii 2GB and a Maximus V Formula w/ a MOSFET heatsink w/ 3/8" barbs for watercooling. I used to build systems years ago before watercooling was prevalent. The last time I screwed around with watercooling I had an Athlon 500MHz and I bought a watercooling kit that used a thermos with brass barbs plasti-welded onto it as a reservoir; that was the pinnacle of watercooling "kits" at the time LOL. I mention this all because I'm relatively clueless when it comes to today's tech. I did just enough research to put a system together, but in beginning to research a watercooling system, it seems that the learning curve is steep and the options limitless. I'm hoping to get some solid advice to help me put a watercooling system together that adapts to my 650D without extensive cutting or drilling.

From the limited knowledge I've acquired so far, I'm thinking of using a dual 120mm low profile radiator up top and a 200mm radiator in front, both pulling air into the case. A single 120mm fan will exhaust out the rear. The MOSFET barbs are 3/8", so I'm planning on running all 3/8" I.D. line to accommodate this. I'll be using EK plexi/nickel CPU and GPU blocks as EK is the only manufacturer I know of that makes a block for the DirectCU ii. Reservoir will be a Koolance dual bay / dual pump. I'm planning on a single loop, as the research I've seen so far suggests dual loops carry minimal benefit. When it comes to pumps, I'm clueless, but many seem to think dual pumps are necessary for a system of this type.

Upper radiator: XSPC EX240 dual 120mm low profile
Upper radiator fans: ?????
Front radiator: Phobya Xtreme 200mm
Front radiator fans: ?????
Reservoir: Koolance RP-452X2
Pump(s): ?????
CPU block: EK Supremacy plexi / nickel
GPU block: EK plexi / nickel
3/8" line

Questions
1) Is 3/8" tubing sufficient for this setup?
2) Single loop or dual?
3) Single pump or dual pumps? What make / model?
4) What fans? Are there any that will attach to the front rad without drilling?
5) How are people mounting the 200mm front rad in this case?

For routing, I was planning on: Pump(s) --> CPU --> MOSFET --> upper rad --> GPU --> lower rad --> reservoir

If anyone has any feedback on my choice of hardware, or can answer any of my questions or comment on the routing, it would be greatly appreciated. I realize I'm asking for a lot here and have much to learn; any feedback at all would be extremely helpful.

Tubing size doesn't really matter, just get what you think looks best.
2) Single loop or dual?
Again, it's up to you. There wouldn't be any advantage to running dual loops. I would say single loop because you only have to buy one pump and there won't be as much tubing all over the place. tongue.gif
3) Single pump or dual pumps? What make / model?
A single MCP655 or MCP35X should do the job fine.
4) What fans? Are there any that will attach to the front rad without drilling?
I don't know for sure which fans will fit, but the Phobya rad comes with a few adapters to accommodate fans with different hole positions.
5) How are people mounting the 200mm front rad in this case?
I saw one build where the front rad was attached with industrial-grade double sided tape, but you could just just drill a few holes in the front panel and screw it on.
For routing, I was planning on: Pump(s) --> CPU --> MOSFET --> upper rad --> GPU --> lower rad --> reservoir
Just do whatever is easiest to route and uses the least amount of tubing possible.
Maybe this: Pump > Upper rad > Cpu > Mosfet > Gpu's > Lower rad > Res

And a big thank to G-WizZ for the tip. +REP

EDIT: By the way, that Phobya 200 is seeping at the G1/4 inlet joint weld. Gonna get some silicone sealant to seal it up. frown.gif Do they even have a leaktest as part of the QC process at the factory?

Very nice rig. What fan do you use for the 35x heatsink?

they would actually work with the controller?
i heard if you remove the original fans of corsiar that comes with the H100 the fan controller wont work any more .. :/

To be honest, I assume you can and it should work fine. I don't see how it would "know" you don't have corsair fans hooked up. BUT don't quote me onto that. the 650D should fit Push Pulls with an H100, at least my Sabertooth does, so you can use your factory 2, and the 2 led fans as well i would ASSUME.

Thank you. It's the Noiseblocker NB-BlackSilentPro PC-P 80mm x 15mm Ultra Silent PWM Fan - 2500 RPM.

I just hooked it up to the chassis fan connector and set it to scale with the pump. Any 80mm x 15mm will do actually. smile.gif

Hey everybody,

It's been a little while coming but I finally got my Monolith cleaned up to a point that I like biggrin.gif
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Nice and clean with all that room for air flow now

Nice pic with no flash, ,,video card sags a little but it's not too bad

Nice clean bezel, removed the card reader for the HDD and SDD
I moved the HDD and SSD into the 5.25" baysd with a couple adapters I picked up from the local computer store.

I managed to keep the cable management pretty clean inside the case by the PSU even after flipping it so the fan sucks the hot air out and exhausts out the bottom.

I have this on carpet now since we moved into a carpeted apt after getting married four months ago.

It'll do for now till I get some more funds to play with it biggrin.gif but I did want to start on a HTPC for all the movies that we have so that may be my next big investment lol

Hope you all dig it, keep up all the good work you guys do here.

Cheers

edit: rotated the pictures so that you all could see them better, and sorry for the quality, I took them with my iphone
