Another newb overclocker wanting advice :)

CPU: i5 760
Air cooling.
Not stock cooler, without overclocking I never hit above 35c. Forgot the cooler model though :s

So, I understand the theory behind overclocking but have never really tried it. I was bored and gave it a poke tonight.

I upped the FSB to 180 and all was fine, but I figured I wanted to try and peak over 4000mhz so off I went playing with voltage, after a while I realised the voltage gain wasn't worth the damage as I often give my old computers to family members.

The issue is even after dropping the Vcore back to default and leaving FSB at 180 I noticed that the temprature of core2 is getting to high, however it's peaking way above the other cores.

Is this normaly for a quad core to have 1 core double the temp of the others? (Check max temp, the 61c was a stress test @ 170FSB, 81c was a stress test @ 180FSB).

Each core was under equal load, only thing I can think of is Trubo mode kicked in on that core and just that core. Which would seem weird but I guess possible.

Is this normal?

get coretemp and post a screenshot of that. For all we know the highlighted temp could be from the board.

And that vcore is uncomfortably high. Reduce it to stock before you nuke the processor, and then follow the advice of those who post after me, they know more about overclocking one of these than i do

Yea I meant to drop that, which I did.

It's now at default Vcore 180FSB running at 3750 ish

whats your target? 4ghz?

The simplest way of doing it is by increasing the FSB as far as it will go, and when it gets unstable, start increasing the voltages slowly until stability is restored, and then push again for the target. Once the target is reached, stress the system. If it passes, cut the voltages back a little and stress again. The idea is to give it enough juice to maintain 4ghz while not using too much power, generating too much heat, or giving it too much voltage. you have to strike a balance between heat, power, and voltage. Sometimes its that 1mhz which you are trying to get that makes the difference between an unstable overclock and a rock solid one.
