Need GPU for upgrade

Thread Starter
So if all goes as planned I should be picking up a 2500k next week and I have narrowed down my mobo and RAM choices, so all I have left to figure out is what GPU to get because this 8800GT doesn't cut it anymore.

I was looking at the GTX460 1GB, but I am not sure if that will be good enough to run what I want with the settings I want using the native resolution of my monitor. I play mostly WoW but I do play BC2 and probably will be picking up Black Ops shortly. I want to run with pretty high quality settings at 1920x1080 and make sure I never dip below 60 FPS, preferably staying around 80-100 in whatever game I may be playing.

As for price I want to stay under $350, whether it be a single card or multi-GPU solution. And I don't really mind MIR's but would prefer without them.

I was considering:
GTX570
SLI GTX460 1GB

I have no preference of ATI or Nvidia, however I do only buy cards made by EVGA (for Nvidia) or XFX (for ATI) because of their warranties, the EVGA step-up, and support.

Don't go multi-gpu for that price, you're better off with a single-card solution for $350.

I will say go with the GTX 570 or 6970.

Yeah I haven't checked much into the ATI counterparts for the GTX5xx cards, so is the 6970 roughly equal to the 570 performance wise?

Yes, its on par or a few % slower according to these benchmarks. Can't go wrong with either though, so just flip a coin if you can't choose, the difference is that trivial.

GTX 570 all the way man.

I love it. And my upgrade was only from a 6870 to a 570 and I felt a difference.

I remember reading an article recently about the 6850 being able to "unlock" to a 6870... is that really true?

If so that is probably the route I will go, but if doing that won't make it perform near the 6870 then I don't really want to risk rendering the card useless by doing that mod.

no that was the 6950 unlocking to a 6970 from what i remember.

But unlocking caused issues with a lot of peoples cards, so i wouldnt count on it, and if you can just consider it a bonus.

Im in the same boat as you. Im run at 1900x1200 and at rez the 570 beats the 6970. Im going to wait until CES is over to get my 570 hoping a non reference card comes out.
