Cheap CPU Recommendation please

Thread Starter
I'm building a computer for my wife that is only going to be used for her programming. Requirements: needs to work with DDR2 1066mhz ram.

I was thinking a cheapo used core 2 duo, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Strictly for programming, the E3x00 dual-core celerons should do. They drop right into 775 sockets.($40)

If you want something with more cache, then there are the E6x00 and E7x00... Should find them on here for about $50-60.

If you still need to buy a motherboard, I'd just opt for an AMD Athlon II X3. They are super cheap and you can just as easily unlock it and overclock it (to get some better performance from the northbridge) and she's set.

Are AMB motherboards really cheap then? I was just leaning towards intel because it's all I've ever known...

If it's just programming go with the G41 chipset and a Pentium 4. All this can be had for about $75.

I recommend this mobo:

EDIT: Make sure you get a P4 520, 506 or 505J and update to the F3 BIOS if you follow my suggestion.

Programming what? Simple Hello World type, yeah sure, even Atom is fast enough.

Large projects in Visual Studio with lots of dependencies? Be nice and get her at least an Athlon II X2 or Pentium E6x00.

I would go with an Athlon II X4. There's a MicroCenter probably no more than 20miles away from you. Get a free motherboard with processor purchase. The combos are with AM2+ boards too, so the DDR2 will work with them.
