Anyways, OP; sorry to say but age discrimination is pretty blatant everywhere in society. Sure you may be that 1 kid in 50 that actually knows a thing about computers, but some retailers just see kids as targets of exploitation. It's just like when buying a car, if you're a female you really get screwed with pricing, trade in, options/upgrades, and all that but if you bring a male along with you (even if they stand in the background) their whole tune changes (it's funny if they act really abrasive and sarcastic with the sales reps, like "that's not the price/interest rate that I saw before was it honey?").

PS: I love how people usually outside of North America say "dodgy" whereas in Canada (and the US I assume) we say "sketchy". Just some random thing that I picked up.

Cripes, that's pretty horrible that that guy would treat you like that. Maybe he has shoop vision and in his mind they are bent In all honesty though everyone saying that you should bring in your dad is right. Calmly ask to speak to the manager and explain the situation, there is no reason or excuse for that guy being a dick to you.

I feel your pain, kid. I had a mother like some people have mentioned, if I didn't get my way I'd send her in and she'd sort the problem out.

Here's the thing: ALWAYS Escalate. If the guy behind the counter won't give you what you want, ask his/her name and then ask for the manager. If they don't straighten up their act then, they will when the manager arrives. If that doesn't work, getting louder and louder does. No manager wants a customer in their shop shouting about how rude and unhelpful they are being. Make sure other customers can hear you because that's what the show is for.

The biggest mistake you made was leaving the store empty handed. As you say, he might try to say you bent the pins back. However, it would be really clear if you had done that and the pictures clearly show that there areno bent pins on that CPU.

Also contrary to what MyGaffer says, the customer IS always right. Sure, in the case he gave with the harddrives that guy was plain out to rob them, but in this case, your case, you are right, they are wrong and you are owed a replacement.

Never leave the store empty handed, or without making your threats.

I once had to return an MP3 player that was sold with a warranty of instant replacement if it broken. During the time I had it they changed the T&C to state that products over a value of £250 are valid for instant replacement and mine was £220. The guy behind the counter tried to fob me off on this. I said those T&C changed during my warranty and that I was sold the warranty under the condition that it was instant replacement. I ended up shouting at the guy and called him an effing effing idiot and said he clearly doesn't understand the Sales of Goods Act. My loudness grew the attention of all the customers in the store, with one of them even supporting me. Eventually the manager arrived back from his lunch break in the middle of the fracas and it was obvious his immediate goal was to make me stop shouting, ranting and raving and to see what the problem was. I left the store with a replacement and some free Sony headphones. I was 16 at the time and if it wasn't for my experiences getting my mum to return faulty crap I wouldn't have had a clue and would probably have taken the clerks word for it. But really, I was right because they can change the T&C of new warranties, but our contract said instant replacement and it was binding. The guy was just trying to get out of replacing a product, which I know for a fact (used to work at Dixons, in the UK) that the managers look extremely favourably on this.

Shame you're not in England anymore because we have some beastly rights over here.

Here's what you do. You return to the store and immediately find the guy. Tell him you want to speak to the manager about how he belittled you the other day and infringed on your statutory rights. Tell him you'll be by the CPU counter (or somewhere within the store) and DO NOT give him a chance to say anything. Just leave and find somewhere to wait for the manager.

When the manager arrives, first start by explaining the problem with the CPU and constantly mention (even lie if it highlights your abilities) how you've built a few PC's in your time and this is the first bad CPU you've had. Tell him the clerk said the CPU pins were bent, but to be honest, he didn't even know D-Sub and VGA are one and the same. Tell the manager that at first he said pins and when you asked him to show you the pins he pointed to one single pin, that in fact wasn't even bent. Tell him you've seen many a bent pin in your time building PC's and it would be blaitently obvious if the pin was bent.

Then, get onto the language this bloke used towards you and how you felt he was belittling you because of your age, despite the fact that he doesn't even know that d-sub and VGA are the same. Then lay it on thick how he actually lost a sale because of that lack of information. Inform the manager that it wouldn't be unreasonable to request a little conpensation both for the insult of having your intelligence and reasoning questioned on this matter of the broke CPU and for the fact that this is the second trip you've had to make to return a faulty product which should have been replaced the first time.

IF none of that works, ignore MyGaffer and inform them that you will be contacting trading standards to seek advice and you will most likely be filing with a small claims court to recoup the cost of the CPU and the petrol used to get to the store.

Oh and have your mum or dad with you the entire time, but if you can help it try to do ALL the talking. This is for you and them. One, you'll probably feel fantastic once you get the replacement all by yourself and two, they won't give you ANY crap while you have a parent there.

Also, use that same, polite, but sly tone the clerk used on you. The entire time.

Haha nice I'm actually 6ft 2" ish, but you can imagine how that won't affect a 24 year old 'kid' who is around the same height

I'm pissed that my mate's stepdad got sold Windows 7 Home Premium from his 'friend' for $350, and it wasn't even genuine. I couldn't bring myself to tell him though, and just offered to get rid of the Windows is not Geniune using RemoverWAT instead.

I also see shops here ripping people off... GT220 for $99? That's a bit harsh...
